Not exactly the forum for this question, but I just wanted to get your feedback, since I'm pretty sure you ladies would definitely be interested in hormone free birth control. I'm researching about the paragard and wanted to hear if any of you have any experiences with it?

Thanks! Apparently breastfeeding is also a good form of birth control, so, we'll see how that goes in addition to fertility awareness.
Permalink Reply by Francesca on As much as I would hope my partner would "SNIP SNIP," I can't force him because we may want children in the future (I'm saying MAY because I have NEVER, EVER, EVER felt drawn to children nor wanted any. Ever.) I can't guarantee that I'll be with the same person forever, either, and I'd rather have good protection that is not hormonal than ask every partner I have to snip himself. :) It's just safer than the standard pull-out or "wait, hold on...get the condom" methods.
The paragard definitely has its risks. It can cause pain and heavy bleeding for a few months for women. I am willing to test it out to see how it affects me. I spent hours and hours searching all over the Internet for reviews and experiences, and what I've found is that there really is no way any woman can know how it will affect her until she tries it. I've also spoken with petite women with no children who say it went smoothly and they are happy with their paragard. I know women who got it post-birth and said it was so painful and caused painful periods. I HAVE noticed, however, that women who typically already have cramps/PMS have more symptoms with the paragard. Also, women who are obese or unhealthy who have had problems. Even so, my coworker is overweight and she never had a problem with her copper IUD.
I have very scanty periods, insignificant, irregular. I go months without it. I have NEVER had cramps or PMS. I never know when it will show up (haha) because my body doesn't have clear signs. I consider myself very healthy, especially with this diet. I have confidence I'll have no problem getting it. I'll just take ibuprofen beforehand, afterward, deal with discomfort for a little while, then be fine and protected. And the best part is that if it ends up being a mistake, it's removable, which apparently hurts way less than when it's inserted.
Permalink Reply by Camille G on I got the paragaurd inserted a year ago and it will last me nine more years. I absolutely love it. I've had no problems with it at all and I would recommend it to every women. It costs a lot upfront but is one of the cheapest birth controls over time and one of the most effective. Get it!

Permalink Reply by Camille G on I'm only 21 and I haven't had any children. I got my period only three times in 2011. Twice before the IUD was inserted and once a few months after. I know one of the cautions is that it might make your period heavier, which I was worried about, but it didn't affect my cycle at all. Ever since I got off hormone birth control I have ovulated regularly every month, even when I don't get my period.
When it was inserted I had very, very light bleeding and I felt tender when I tried to take a run the next day. But the bleeding stopped a few hours after the IUD was inserted and when I ran again two days after I felt completely fine and not tender at all. There have been no issues at all since and it's like nothing is there at all.
That's great your work insurance covers the entire thing!

I've also started taking some Vitex tincture to help strengthen my vagina, so hopefully recovery will be better and I'll prevent nasty symptoms. But...I'll only know until I try, which won't be for another month. :( The doctor that will be inserting it is very experienced. She has inserted thousands! She says about 10% come back to get it removed. I'm confident in being part of that 90% that doesn't.

Permalink Reply by dangermouse on I've had both copper IUDs available in Canada, the NovaT and the FlexiT. The NovaT lengthened my period slightly (spotting for two or three extra days) and I got cramps which I'd never had before. They weren't bad, though; and I was perfectly happy and able to just ignore them. With the FlexiT, my periods are shorter again and no cramps at all. I absolutely love my IUD.
