30 Bananas a Day!

Hey yo. I have a difficult time following a raw diet without also developing a contracted mental state that comes from thinking about what I can and cannot eat, what I should and shouldn't do. How can I keep my mind clear and easy while also doing my body a solid by following this diet? Any tips?

Meditation is really the only thing I can think of. Try to really ask yourself why you have chosen to eat this way and see if it is because of fear/anxiety or a positive desire to improve your life somehow.

Thanks for this! I chose 2 or 3 specific reasons for why I'm doing this now and I repeat them to myself when I'm out to eat or am tempted to just go with the 'ordinary' food flow. It's been really helpful, and a positive rather than negative mental experience.

Accept about how beautiful you are and how beautiful you can be. Accept no substitutes, embrace what is good and reject what you know is harmful.

Maybe trying to focus on all the food you CAN eat instead?  And do this by supplying yourself with plenty of options. 

Hi Julia, I agree with the others that you can focus on all the abundance and what you can have as opposed to what you cannot.

Also, I feel very much the same way about rules, I hadn't really thought about it before, but I just like to not feel constrained. What I do in terms of diet is just set short term goals, like this next meal is going to be raw, etc with no extending that forward, otherwise I start feeling constrained and want to do something contrary to that. I know it's just a mind game, but it really helps me, changing from a wall/stop sign that says "no!" to making a decision that "next I want to...." eat raw, have some delicious fruit, etc.

The only real rules then are simply in planning, I just have to be sure to have enough fruit on hand. I don't like planning to be honest, but it's not too much to think about some fruit I might be hankering and then go buy enough for a few days.

P.S. LOL! Whew! I just noticed in your post tags...... "beating" now that WILL put some pressure on! If anyone tries to beat you because of what you eat, let me know... I can assemble a team of fruit Ninjas to go take care of them for you!  ;)

I really like your advice about just thinking about the next meal. I know that will work really well for me. :) Changing our habits is a bit of a mind game, but such an important one to play! I know it will get easier as things get more ingrained.

*LIKE* That's the spirit! And yes it will. The really nice thing is you'll just keep feeling better and better which will in turn really help feed the fuel of your desire to eat well!  :)

Thinking about the next meal really helps me too.  I anticipate and look forward to it now.  Takes over brain space formerly assigned to 'poor me I can't eat nothin' ;)

Yes ! - do yourself a "solid" and do not let this diet make you crazy.  I have been there - in a space where I put a lot of time and mental energy into all this - and then the next thing I know I'm stressin' and obsessin' after "perfection".  Nowadays - I just sincerely try and do the best I can - and the benefits are truly - still there.

Perhaps a little tip - is that you CAN obsess when it is "just you" - out buying fruit or whatever - you can make ultimate choices then - and sort of "win a major victory" that way.   However, when other people, and "outside" influences are involved, then circumstances are perhaps less amenable to you and your idealistic diet.  In those situations - it can become extremely difficult to maintain a perfectionistic mental outlook.  Again, personally, I just do the best I can in those situations - and it is all still good.

Another thing to is to realize that a lot of "hype" and what causes people to "buy into" things - is the very fact that they are extreme, and so, inherently cause the mind to obsess about them.  Religion, the nightly news, relationship drama, exercise programs, diet, and yadda yadda yadda, if it isn't somehow extreme - then nobody tends to pay any attention.  Hardly anybody is walking the Buddhist "middle way" and claiming any benefit anymore.  And so, naturally, in today's world, we've been kind of mentally trained to think in those terms - that if we aren't going "insane" managing all the extremes - then we aren't even really living.

You're wanting to "keep my mind clear and easy while also doing my body a solid" is about as close to the "real truth" as anybody is ever gonna get in all this - as far as a proper outlook.  Best.

p.s. - Another tip: invest in a top quality blender.  I resisted doing this because of the cost.  However, I just popped for an entry level Vitamix with a 20% OFF coupon at Bed Bath and Beyond, and I can't believe how much easier this lifestyle is now.  Now - it is absolutely no trouble to get high calorie fruit smoothies and datorade in - and this makes the rest of the day eating raw fruit and salads a breeze !

I wanted to add that I got a refurbished BlenTec blender from a merchant on Amazon.com for about $200! They get blenders from closing coffee shops, etc have someone go over them to make sure they work and then sell them cheap. Mine works great! And It allows me to do things like peel and freeze ripe bananas that I cannot get to until after they go nasty, to use later in a smoothie, etc.

It's awesome! If anyone does get a blentec this way, let me know, I found a lid that seals on the blender jar MUCH better so you don't get a bunch of smoothie dripping out while blending. It cost like $8 or something.
