Captain Paul Watson and the oceans still need your support!

Please sign the petitions, send mails and share at facebook to help to free Captain Paul Watson! He is helping the oceans for many years, now he needs our help!

In shocking news, German officials have decided to proceed with the extradition of Captain Watson to Costa Rica.  Our last hope of saving Captain Watson from extradition is to convince German officials at the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to step in and overturn their decision.  Show your support for Captain Watson by contacting Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, the Federal Minister of Justice in Berlin, Germany.  Let her know that the warrant for Captain Watson's arrest is politically motivated and thus should be ignored by the German government.  With international support we can set Captain Watson free, and keep him from the possibility of facing an unfair trial in Costa Rica.

Sample Letter:

Dear Ms Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger,

I was very concerned to hear that Germany has detained Sea Shepherd's Captain Paul Watson for possible extradition to Costa Rica. I understand that the warrant for Captain Watson's arrest is politically motivated and possibly due to an incident in which Sea Shepherd uncovered an illegal shark finning operation.

I support Sea Shepherd's efforts to monitor and publicise illegal fishing and whaling around the world and recognize that some illegal fishing operations try to use international law to shut down the Sea Shepherd operations. I urge you to consider the valuable work Captain Watson and Sea Shepherd are undertaking globally to highlight the dangers to our oceans in considering this extradition request.

Sincerely,

Your Name.

And don t forget: S.O.S. Day – Save Our Skipper – Wednesday May 23rd

For the past week, we have implored Sea Shepherd supporters to write to the Honorable German Ministers of Justice and Foreign Affairs. The decision to release Captain Watson on bail this Monday is the unmistakable result of the thousands of letters, emails, faxes, and phone calls that were sent this week. Granting bail to a non-German national is almost unheard of in an extradition proceeding. While we have won a victory with the decision to allow Captain Paul Watson out on bail, the battle to save his life must now intensify. The Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt has confirmed, together with the General Public Prosecutor, that the authority to save Captain Paul Watson’s life belongs to the Honorable German Minister of Justice. Continue to write, call, email, and fax the Honorable German Ministers of Justice and Foreign Affairs. These Honorable Ministers must see their way clear to act now as delineated by the General Public Prosecutor and Higher Regional Court. Captain Paul Watson is expecting his supporters worldwide to take our demands to save his life to the doorsteps of Germany’s diplomatic missions around the globe. We are calling for a Global Day of Action on Wednesday May 23rd. On this day the President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, will be visiting German Chancellor Merkel in Berlin.

Wednesday May 23rd is S.O.S. Day – Save Our Skipper! All around the world, Sea Shepherds will be making our voices heard at German embassies and consulates between 1100 and 1300 hours (local time). Organize or join the cacophony of voices at the closest German embassy or consulate and demand Captain Paul Watson’s freedom. We are confident that through your participation, Germany will not carry out an extradition that would be the same as carrying out a death sentence. Captain Paul Watson’s enemies within the shark fin mafia are capable of reaching inside the prisons of Costa Rica. If extradited to Costa Rica, it is unlikely Captain Paul Watson would live to see the inside of a Costa Rican courthouse.

There is no location more important to assemble than where President Chinchilla will begin her head of state visit in Berlin. This meeting will open with full military honors 11:00 am at Schloss Bellevue. Rally to Captain Paul Watson’s side when he personally makes his stand at Schloss Bellevue. Specific details will be forthcoming here and on the Sea Shepherd Germany website. We ask that Captain Paul Watson’s supporters continue to be respectful in their messaging. We are confident that with your help the President of Costa Rica, the German Chancellor, and Honorable Ministers of Germany will safeguard Captain Paul Watson’s human rights by not bowing to bogus accusations of shark fin poachers who are nothing more than common criminals.

I sent another email to the German ministers:

guido.westerwelle@bundestag.de, sabine.leutheusser-schnarrenberger@bundestag.de

My subject heading: In the name of all that is good, release him!‏

Message:

Dear Honors,

The authority to save Captain Paul Watson’s life belongs to the Honorable German Minister of Justice.  Captain Paul Watson’s enemies within the shark fin mafia are capable of reaching inside the prisons of Costa Rica. If extradited to Costa Rica, it is unlikely Captain Paul Watson would live to see the inside of a Costa Rican courthouse.

Sincerely,

My name and country

nice one ednshell!

i have always found it curious that politicians so often use 'the honorable' as an introduction to their name. i wonder if it is some desperate form of self-reassurance or frenzied wishful thinking.

Celebrity Star Power Helps Paul Watson Fight Extradition to Costa Rica

Kelly Slater in 2010

Members of the glitterati are leveraging their star power to help the founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and star of Animal Planet’s Whale Wars to avoid extradition to Costa Rica. Paul Watson is currently free on bail in Germany, awaiting court proceedings which could bring him back to respond to charges of reckless endangerment of a vessel at sea with intent to cause a shipwreck. That incident dates back to 2002.

According to environmental and celebrity site Ecorazzi, pro surfing legend Kelly Slater has officially joined the circle of celebrities rallying in support of Mr. Watson. An email cited by Ecorazzi from Mr. Slater explains that the championship surfer is concerned that increased connections and investments from China and Taiwan in Costa Rica essentially amount to hush money with regard to illegal practices such as irresponsible fishing and shark finning. Mr. Slater believes that this situation is exacerbated by a smokescreen provided by our country’s biodiversity and ecotourism industry.

Mr. Slater concludes with:

“If a light is shined on these [China and Taiwan] connections, their ability to pull secret levers of power will evaporate.”

Costa Rica severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan back in 2007, during the second Oscar Arias administration. The Costa Rica Star has recently touched on this subject on a report about China’s growing influence not just in our country, but also in Caribbean nations like the Bahamas, Dominica and Jamaica. Former President and Nobel Peace Laureate Oscar Arias broke relations with Taiwan and courted the People’s Republic of China (PRC) during the 2008 Summer Olympics, after China had built extensive infrastructure to accommodate the Summer Games. Our new National Stadium is a gift from the PRC.

The Costa Rica Star has also reported on the recent trial of a Taiwanese boat captain who was caught with evidence of shark fin poaching in our Pacific coast last year. The ship arrest of the Fishing Vessel Hung Chi Fu took place in March of 2011 in Puntarenas. The crew of the FV Hung Chi Fu was busy offloading a catch of Hexanchus griesus, blunt-nosed grey sharks (also called cow sharks), which are abundant in the Pacific coast off Costa Rica. The H. griesus catch of the FV Hung Chi Fu was within legal limits, but it was also used to conceal a villainous catch of blue sharks with their fins hacked off. Captain Tsai Yu Jen will now have to pay 62 million colones, about $124,000.

Other celebrities who have vowed to support Mr. Watson in recent days include the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the iconic pinups the Barbi Twins, famous for their calendars and appearances in Playboy. One of Mr. Watson’s former wives, Lisa DiStefano, has also posed in Playboy magazine. Two vessels in Sea Shepherd’s fleet are named after film and television celebrities: French film beauty Brigitte Bardot and American television game host Bob Barker (from The Price is Right). Both Madame Bardot and Mr. Barker have contributed millions of dollars to the Sea Shepherd organization.

A recent in-depth look at the life of Mr. Watson printed by the esteemed Canadian publication McLean’s indicates that even musician Bryan Adams has joined the glitterati in support of Mr. Watson. The McLean’s profile ends with a quote from Canadian naturalist author and World War II veteran Farley Mowat about Mr. Watson:

“He’s the nearest thing I’ve ever had to hero.”

good article and good stuff happening!

Don´t kill the crew on spaceship earth!

Paul Watsons speech in Berlin today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACBe8_ND-T8&sns=fb

brilliant speech! he hit every point so precisely!

he is indeed "master and commander"!

what a turnout too!

is it any wonder volunteers line up to be part of the sscs campaigns?!!

that arrest story is priceless!

as you may know the judge apologized to paul - just as the judge apologized to gandhi.

the spaceship analogy and the importance of the crew is one of the best i've heard!

in friendship,

prad

Am applauding and crying at the same time. Brilliant speech with its simplicity and to the point correctness. What a courageous man to stand up to government and say how they lag behind the people.  prad, you are so right to praise his spaceship analogy; inspiring.

He was being interviewed in US when the person interviewing him said "let me get this straight, you are stating that cockroaches are superior to humans"? Paul' response was, " Now you understand what I am saying. Love this man.

paul been standing up ever since he was 14 yrs when he found out his beaver friends had been annihilated by trappers. he's put his life on the line many times for other beings.

the story goes that when paul watson was reprimanded by a 'politically proper' member of his greenpeace board of directors for sinking half the icelandic whaling fleet, his reply was something like: "i didn't do it for you. i did it for the whales. find me one whale who objects and i won't do it again."

his words are important for all ar activists to remember.

they give us purpose, direction and our reason for being who we are.

in friendship,

prad
