30 Bananas a Day!

Hi All, I have been raw and 811 for a few years now. My problem is that after any strenuous exercise I REALLY struggle to eat sweet fruit or anything sweet. I crave fats and some salt really really strongly, like my head feels all woozy. But I eat fruit instead and I almost have to shove it down my face, it is soooooooooo hard to eat it, I have no appetite for it and I literally have to FORCE myself to eat fruit, and even then, I find it hard to eat enough. For instance, yesterday, I could barely stomach 3 bananas after a run, and I succumbed to my fat cravings and made a collard leaf sandwich with nut pate and veggies. Most of the time I do not succumb. Even adding celery and/or having green smoothies does not help my cravings, these insanely strong feelings for fat. For example, even after all these years, after a big mountain hike, I will feel STRONG urges for french fries and Indian food, like as if I had eaten them yesterday (even though I haven't eaten either for years and years).
I guess my biggest problem is my complete lack of wanting or appetite for sweet fruit after strenuous exercise.

Any ideas?

What about a savory wrap with zucchini, tomatoes, and a 1/3 of avocado. Or some celery with mango/tomato salsa. It sounds to me like you are wanting savory/salt so tomatoes and celery might be the way to go.

How about juicy fruit after? What time of day do you exercise? I usually want more savory food and greens for dinner.

Juicy makes no difference unless it's orange juice, then I'm good with it.

It's a simple conditioning issue.
What would you do if you never knew what a french fry or Indian food was? I can promise you wouldn't be craving it. For how can one crave something which they are unaware exists?
You can condition yourself to respond to a variety of things.

The hard part is getting the the point where you crave the foods that are best for you.
Look at Gerson Therapy for cancer...it's not exactly something we crave...I don't know anyone who goes crazy for apple and carrot juice. I certainly don't. I think it tastes good, but I don't feel like it tastes so good that I would rather have it than any other food. And yet, it reverses cancer.

Perhaps this is what the Buddhists mean when they say "all life is suffering." Why can't the damn foods that are the absolute best tasting be the best for you. It only makes sense doesn't it!?

But alas this isn't so. And it sends us messages subconsciously that the universe is trying to play a cruel joke on us. But all we have to do is take a step back and realize that all these cravings we have are derived from foods that require alteration and refinement. We don't crave these foods because we actually need them, but it almost feels that way at times. I know. I'm writing this because I have these same kind of sensations.

It's all about consistency.
For example: I used to drink soda all the time and it got to the point that if I didn't have like 4 or so a day I would get serious cravings. If by some chance I missed a day or two, the next soda I had would taste that much better.
I soon realized what a mistake drinking these poisonous substances was and I had my last one probably 5 years ago now. At first I remember there was a sense of withdrawal and like I was missing something. But right now, even the thought of a soda just makes me feel ill.
The last time I remember having one it was a good memory. I enjoyed it. I stopped cold turkey and now, for some reason, I don't even know how or when it happened...it's like I feel completely opposite about them.
Another case with me is pasta. I used to love eating any kind of pasta dish. Red sauce, garlic bread, all that. Haven't had any of that for almost 2 years now. I still to this day when I get really hungry will have a craving. But I know I don't need it. It's not that I believe I don't need it. I KNOW it. And it's a big step to KNOW. So what do I do? I simply stop thinking about it.

I guess maybe it's like getting over a girlfriend or boyfriend right? The more you think about them the more you miss them the more you want them back and so on. All you have to do is stop thinking about them, and the best way to do that is to focus on other people (and I think this is why lots of people do the rebound thing, because it helps them move on to some degree, although it often backfires lol).

So the way I deal with this situation, is I simply forget about processed foods of any kind. I know they are not needed for my species because I know our anatomy is far older than the advent of cooked food or high fat diets. It just doesn't enter the equation as an option for me. All I have is cantaloupe for instance...so I simply eat enough of it.
Find something that works.
There WILL be something that is 811 that will work. You just gotta find it. I would suggest papaya if you can find some good papaya where you are.
Either way, I don't crave bananas after a workout myself either. I crave high water content stuff that also has a decent amount of calories.

Try this out: next time you work out, grab just one type of fruit...cantaloupe, mango, papaya, whatever you feel like...
And just eat a bunch of it. Just keep stuffing yourself. If you still have a craving for something else...KEEP stuffing yourself with the fruit...if you eat enough of it, you will get to a point where you will feel no more cravings for the other foods. And then you will realize approximately how many calories you need post workout.
In a sense what you are trying to accomplish is exactly what mother always warns us about "spoiling your dinner." You want to spoil your craving for dinner by eating all your sweets first (only this time you are not binging on cake and jolly ranchers, because those spoil your health as well as your dinner).

Just give it a shot. Sometimes after I workout I have 3 whole cantaloupes or 6 mangoes or so many oranges I can't even count.
Just a thought! If you find all sweet fruits not to your liking at all, then it's time to experiment I would say, which may require some forced torture on your part.

You have to wonder why one would like sweet fruits normally, but perhaps not so much after a workout. The only reason I can think of is mental conditioning. It's not an easy thing to get over...And I hate telling people to torture themselves to test out if it really is just a mental thing, but how else is one going to do it?

I dunno...that's what I would suggest doing (and in fact what I did do myself).

Hi Mario, thanks for your reply. To clarify a few misunderstandings:
- I don't crave processed foods in particular, just fat, so it could be an avocado and it would still satisfy me, I don't need to reach for any Indian food.
-I never ever crave anything like Indian food or French fries except after a long workout
-That's what I do, I do try to eat a lot of fruit aftr because I find it is CRITICAL to recovery, and I just find I am unable to stomach it. Therein lies the problem because even hours after I still have a disgust for anything sweet, and crave fat as a calorie dense substitute.

You're right, it's probably deep conditioning from all my past. I can't even remember what I used to eat when I was younger after workouts.

maybe you shouldn't workout so hard. maybe the agricultural revolution was possible -because- of grains. in other words they could give you sustained energy...if you were using it. but i don't think monkeys work "hard"... you know? this isn't sarah either, another person on the computer

I train really hard on fruit. Durianrider trains like no other on fruit. I don't care what monkeys do. I'm human, not monkey. Having said that, it looks as though monkeys, as are any wild animals, are a lot more active than humans.

I'm just going to answer out of turn here a little bit, because I don't have any documentation in front of me, just a vague memory of an article I read about hyponutremia - a condition where your blood nutrient levels get overly diluted from drinking water while doing strenuous exercise to excess. apparently, according to this vague memory of this article, while you're exercising strenuously, your body shuts down most of its digestive capacity to focus on the task at hand. Putting too much water in the system at that point just overloads your digestion and floods your blood, which is actually more dangerous than dehydration.

So, my point is - maybe you're exercising so strenuously that your body isn't ready to digest or eat anything? And, like Mario said, your desire to eat something fatty is a conditioned response? I second what Mon said - wait an hour or so or until you feel a natural hunger coming back for something sweet. The whole head feeling woozy thing - I don't know how fat could make that feeling go away, but it makes sense to have some celery, or maybe a tomato-celery blend. And are you hydrated enough?

Reply to This

Thanks, as I already said in the post, I tried celery... and...I may not be hydrated enough, wasn't your point in the above article about overhydration though? Thanks.

yeah, I'm sorry, my post got a little convoluted as I was writing it - one of those things that pops up as an idea and then as you write through it turns itself into something else! I hate it when that happens! : ) and I apologize - I missed your mention of celery.

I am very interested in this idea of water and drinking during exercise. Lately I have noticed that if I drink water in the middle of my workout I feel very nauseous and weak for a few minutes. It does not happen every time but on a couple occasions it felt very bad. So I guess the idea is to make sure you are hydrated before you workout, meaning make sure you drink enough water in the morning and sometime before exercise. Is this the idea of the article?

I have also noticed that waiting a least 30 minutes after exercise works best for eating, usually by then I have a raging hunger!

Eat some fat, when you work out you need to replenish what you lost. Listen to your body it will tell you what you need. raw though

Windlord, I see your point - $2.50 for an energy bar would buy a stack o' bananas... anyway, a guy telling ppl to eat vegan can't be a bad thing; people must then adjust their purchases according to their budget allowances.
