Cheers

Permalink Reply by Tarah @ 40 Below Fruity on April 15, 2012 at 5:33pm I fly fairly regularly, around 1 to 2 times internationally per year. Last November I flew from Canada to Japan and onto Australia a few weeks later.
You can bring bananas, dates, sultanas, and greens on any flight in the world. You can bring as much as you'd like, and I've never had a problem getting them through customs. The one exception is Australia. You can eat all the fruit you like on the flight, but you cannot bring fresh bananas and greens into the country. I had no problem bringing dates, sultanas, and dried apples though.
That should make it easy when you're on the plane.
Also there are many great flight companies that will provide you with a fruit platter. The ones i'm familiar with are:
Air Korea
Air China
Japan Air
Cathay Pacific
Before traveling anywhere I always check what (if any) fruit is in season at my destination. In every case, no matter where I'm traveling, I bring at least 10lbs of dates with me. This is an essential for traveling. That way you can stave off hunger if you cannot get fresh fruit right away. Sultanas are also good for this, and I usually bring around 5lbs. I only use backpacks while traveling, so it can get heavy but it really is worth it.
I usually bring my bicycle and trailer wherever I travel and this helps as well. If I'm cycling with a trailer I can keep a case of fresh fruit with me at all times.
Hope this helps!
Permalink Reply by Sunflower on April 17, 2012 at 1:32pm That's great Tarah,
Thank you. I will certainly give it a go. Although it depends on the mood of certain Airport Security staff. I've seen a lot of food thrown away, hence the question. I think I shall simply pack it sensibly in my hand luggage and hope for the best.
Cheers.

Permalink Reply by Tarah @ 40 Below Fruity on April 18, 2012 at 12:39am Absolutely, but to be honest legally speaking they can't actually throw out your bananas and dates. I usually have them open in a bag, no problems. When in doubt, though, it's better to be safe.
What countries are you flying into/out of?
Permalink Reply by Arielle on April 22, 2012 at 9:01pm Actually, they can.
In a lot of places, agriculture is not allowed to go through security, particularly hawaii and a bunch of the greener places.
it's unfortunate, but true!!
Permalink Reply by Tarah @ 40 Below Fruity on April 23, 2012 at 12:04am Ahh good ol' America.
I'm not saying you can bring fruit into a country, only out of the country. Almost every place I travel will not allow me to bring fresh fruit through customs. This is why you have to eat the food on the plane.
Permalink Reply by Nickalas Angel on April 15, 2012 at 6:25pm Great tips! I have been wondering about this because like Arielle I am a musician and will be touring a lot soon...was a bit worried about how I would handle this issue. Thanks for the tips!!!
Permalink Reply by Sunflower on April 17, 2012 at 1:40pm Glad this thread was useful to you Nickalas. Don't forget to share your experiences from your next flight on 30bad :o)
Oh, and great name for your business btw ;o)
All the best.

Permalink Reply by Arielle on April 22, 2012 at 9:04pm I hear you. Don't worry..it's totally doable.
I think like I mentioned above, the only thing is that some airports do not allow fruit to go through check in. They even have dogs that can sniff them out. (They barked at me even when I had fruit taken from me..lol) They could smell it.
When that happens, you have no choice but to buy stuff once you are through security. That has happened to me before. But the fortunate thing about places that do not allow their agriculture through security are, they ALWAYS have them in the airport by the gates. I bought a pineapple, a few bananas and other things once that happened because I was so hungry and bummed. It wasn't organic either (grr) most of the time..but what can you do at that point?
Was it more expensive? Yes..but I had to fill up for the 6 hour plane ride so I didn't get out all loopy and grumpy!!! :P

You have to get the food on the plane first to eat it there. It's not worth the hassle of what essentially is "smuggling" it through. To say that they "legally" can't take it from you is all well and good. You have a choice at the end of the day, hang on to your fruit and stay where you are, or give it up and board the plane.
Likewise, Arielle, I will probably need to buy after going through security - always a rip off, but that's the way it is.
Permalink Reply by Tarah @ 40 Below Fruity on April 23, 2012 at 12:12pm I'm not sure where these situations are happening...Can anyone give any actual examples not based on fear?
Dates are always allowed in, without exception, as are sultanas.
I've been to Egypt, Kenya, France, the U.S, China, Japan, Ecuador, and Australia and I have not once had trouble bringing fruit on the plane ride. Of course bringing fruit into another country can sometimes be a problem, but even Australia which is supposed to have extremely strict quarantine laws let me in with fresh dates, apples, and sultanas.
On top of this, almost every major airport in the U.S now has fresh pressed orange juice from a company that ships to them in the same day. I was able to get 2 litres of fresh orange juice in many places before the flight. It's in a bottle and can be found at most cafes.
