Do hill climbs walking then work up to jogging. Jogging does have the most injuries but if done with care it strengthens your bones and ligaments. I know you can find a bike if you really want one. Even a used one will allow really good workouts with minimal knee risks. If anything you will extend your years of mobility if you exercise. Use it or lose it!
I am personally not a big fan of jogging. I recommend low impact exercises like walking, power walking, yoga, belly dancing, and other mild forms of dancing.
On a low fat raw fruit diet, and when fat, animal products, cholesterol, salts, and chemicals are removed from the body, fitness becomes 90% diet and 10% exercise.
We also need to maintain our joints, muscles, and bones for the next 100 years. Not just today.
So, experiment, and find out what you like and what works for you.
thanks guys for your input, i was thinking about swimming but was scared about the crap they put in the water to keep it clean. What do you guys think about ocean water.
Do you think if i spent hours each day in salt water, it would have a negative effect?
I agree with Brooke that chlorine is not necessarily your friend (harsh and highly reactive) and yet I think, like Julie, that if a person needs some exercise and walking or running or cycling don't work for them and swimming does, far better that than doing nothing at all.
Just be sure to make educated decisions, weigh the cost and benefits and go from there. Also, don't worry about having the perfect exercise, the perfect routine, whatever, don't get too hung up on what you are going to do forever, just start doing something and then go from there. You may find that as you do more, more and more fun exercise activities start to present themselves to you! :)
brooke with cycling i find it doesn't give me a full body workout.... its like the rest of my body is taking a break while my legs are moving.
I average seven hours a week in a pool at L.A. Fitness that is primarily saline with small amounts of chlorine. Lap swimming and water aerobics. The wonderful benefits I derive from this enjoyable exercise far outweigh any concern over the trace amounts of chlorine. I feel fantastic.

I've just about living in the ocean this summer. Bodyboarding 2-3 hours non-stop everyday 6 days a week. Today it was red flag and nice big waves. It's a great workout and salt water and sun has been used to treat various skin conditions for thousands of years.
Use fins to get the full body workout.

jogging for me is the only way i can become better at running... i don't see anything wrong with it if you're careful and take care of yourself, best done on grass or sand though.... but what exactly terms jogging? like for me, i call every run i do a jog because i don't think i'm very fast... depending on the lenght of km's i do and how many hills i include 6 - 7.5min/km is my average speed....
