30 Bananas a Day!

Giving fruit to people in hospitals -what do you think!?

Recently I was in hopsital for a week. They put alot of pressure on me to eat their "normal" food, and eventually I caved. Of course -being six months 811, it made me pretty sick.

It gave me an idea for a project. I dont know how to translate the slogan, but the idea is to get a group of volonteers who visit people in hospital and bring them some fruit.
Alot of people are lonely when they are in the hospital, and days are long.

So, basically its about bringing a little love and a little fruit to someone in need of both.

In Denmark the gouvernment is running a campaign to make people eat more fruits and greens. But still, the food you get in the hospitals is absolutely horrible! Wouldnt that be the time and place you need it the most!

They do have fruit, but theres is maybe 10 pieces og fruit for 20 people -at least that is my experince..

Im working on a website, making drafts for flyers and posters. And now thinking about finding partners to run this projekt.

It is not supposed to be provocative, but to just make a statement.

Just wanted to share my thoughts and hear what you all think. Maybe you have ideas...

Fantastic idea. Thank you. :)))
In fact, bless you for doing that!
I helped out at a food pantry today. There is a ton of shelf-stable food, sitting there with very long and short expiration dates - all kinds of different dates. They don't carry any perishables.

I was trying to figure out how to supply fresh produce in this situation. It would be a challenge I can see. I believe most people who come to receive want and expect the kind of food they provide. Their "fruit" is all canned - and every order contains a can of fruit, also canned tuna/meats, dry goods like pastas, bags of sugar and flour, cookies and crackers, cereal, canned tomato sauces and pastes and canned veggies. They also provide milk, they were out of canned milk, but they did have cartons of almond milk.

The challenge with the fresh produce would be to figure out how to keep it in the food pantry. The pantry stockpiles all these non-perishables so they rarely run out of supplies - there would have to be a steady stream of fresh produce coming in, at a certain ripeness and to make sure that it will be used by the person receiving it.

The person who would run a fresh food pantry would really need to look at it as full time work, to ensure that a supply would be coming in on a very consistent and reliable basis. The pantry I helped out at is run twice a week for 2 hours each time.

Just something to consider.
Off course I will -It is in danish though...
Fantastic!!!!
On monday I will start my 10 week adventure in a psychosomatics-clinic-thingy. It will be a HUGE fight to even get anything cooked vegan. Y_Y
You have 5 different lunch options, only one is vegetarien. And even in the vegetarien veggiesoup there's meat once in a while. If you insist you can have ONE piece of (unripe) fruit a day. It's not allowed to keep food at your room. Plus in the first 2 weeks there's a communication ban with the 'outside world'. At least there are dietitians who I can try to talk to...
But I'm stubborn! I will get my fruit (and perhaps rice with corn or something like this *sigh*).
And when I survived this enchanting experience I will start some 'fruit for the hospital'-action myself.
Although it's probably prohibited to bring food to patients you don't know.
A cheer for german bureaucracy!
