30 Bananas a Day!

My diet is 80% fruits, usually avocados, apples, watermelon, cantaloupe, and pineapple. I've been eating like this for 2 years and feel great, but I'm wondering if eating a lot of fruit can negatively effect candida. Does the 80/10/10 diet help with candida or does it make it worse?

Avocados are too fatty, swap them with bananas.

Candida overgrows when there's too much fat in your blood:

But I love fat :( I eat an avocado every day and a handful of almonds... sometimes more.

then you are not 80/10/10. you love fat because it has a lot of calories, carb yourself up and you'll be fine

I am the same way! Okay, Ill try to eat more carbs!

If you eat fat late in your day it will have less negative effect on you. This is because the fat coats the bloodstream raising the insulin resistance which traps the sugar in the bloodstream. If the fat is eaten as your last meal it can be removed while you sleep so that when you wake up your ready to eat fruit without a high insulin resistance.

Hi Aydriana, have you read 80/10/10 yet? Have you set up an account on cronometer.com? You may in fact be able to eat an avocado a day if you eat enough other stuff that your calories are:

at least 80% from carbs
up to 10% from fat

up to 10% from protein

If you go over/under a bit here and there, it's not the end of the world, but overall you want to be close to these ratios, that is if you want to follow 80/10/10 and/or the guidelines here.

I understand you love avocados, that's fine. Why don't you first start logging your food intake to see where you are? Maybe you don't need to change anything at all! If you do, give it a try for a few weeks, see how you feel. It could just be that you feel so great that you don't miss that extra overt fat in your diet as much as you love the way you feel without it!

It just seems to me to be spinning your wheels if you want to pursue an 80/10/10 lifestyle but do not want to adhere to 80/10/10 dietary ratio guidelines because you love avocados and almonds too much, LOL! :)

Definitely read the book, it will explain a lot of things such as why to keep the % of calories in your diet down, candida being a big reason!

Hello, perhaps sugar from fruits may be the cause. You may have to create an eating reigmine  or cleanse from candida and then resume eating fruits . Meghan Elizabeth has a video segment on candida and fruits. Go to her website Meghan Elizabeth.com or Dherbs.com video and type in meghan Elizabeth. good luck.

Hi Larena, I think that is for sure one method that people use. But I think if she digs around on here a bit she will find that the main actor is dietary fat, more than sugar. The fat means that the sugar is hindered from being taken up and in that case the candida is actually "helping" (albeit unpleasantly) to get rid of the excess sugar. I have read that if a person simply goes low fat (under 10%) things like candida clear up in a few days, with them eating fruit. Now you (or she) might want to dig into that a bit just to be sure there aren't some caveats to that I'm leaving out, but that's what I've read and heard a number of times.

Hi Chris,

low fat is helpful but it can be tricky with a vegan eating regimine. I eat soy ice cream and I use soy milk in smoothies. I love eating walnuts, cashews, and almonds, I eat avacados as well. Do you have any suggestions about healthy fat . I am not totally raw yet.

Hi Larena, yes! I highly recommend you to read the 80/10/10 Diet by Doug Graham, it really goes into great detail about dietary fat and why it's important to limit it. There are different camps within the broader raw vegan movement and one has more fat and protein like the gourmet raw vegan food. Another camp (this one here) is a high carb, low fate lifestyle. What is unique here is that we recommend *minimum* calories not maximum! LOL! Cool! :)

Be sure to go over all the links in the welcome wagon post. Someone should have put that on your wall when you first signed up. It should give you a lot of information you will find helpful when giving high carb, low fat, raw veganism a shot.

For the reader's digest version, cut out all overt fats at least at first. Get at least 2500 calories from calorie dense fruit such as bananas and dates. Drink 3+ liters of water a day, get at least 8 hours of sleep. Set up a free account over at cronometer.com and log all the food you eat, even (especially) any cheats! It will help you keep track of whether you are getting enough calories and if you are near the 80/10/10 ratio. If you find you are feeling tired or run down or having a lot of cravings then up your calories.

Check out the ingredients supported post (should be linked to from the Welcome Wagon post) so you can see a number of things, some of which you may currently eat, that people have found to be less than helpful in attempting to follow this lifestyle.

As to healthy fats, I's say in general naturally occurring fats as found in fruits and veggies are good, durian, avocado, etc. But I'd log my intake, because probably the least healthy way to approach this is by eating a lot of fruit and a lot of fat, then you may end up with various issues. But no matter what style of eating you finally settle on for the long term, be sure to log your intake so that you make decisions based on data as opposed to simply guessing. A lot of people mean well, but they guess their way through or try to combine 80/10/10 with calorie restriction diets, or high carb with high fat, and it doesn't work out very well.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, low fat is super easy! Just buy a bunch of bananas, dates, grapes, melons, peaches, etc and eat as much as you could possibly want! Easy as pie.. uh.... bananas! ;)
