I've had a fairly disordered relationship with food prior to trying this lifestyle. I would either binge, restrict, or purchase certain foods to reduce the urge to binge such as proteins and fats (foods that are SUPPOSED to help with feelings of fullness)
Even though I had some significant mess-ups with the high carb vegan lifestyle, I felt amazing. My skin looked great and even my family picked up on it. However, they expressed there concern about how many bananas I was eating because they think that too much potassium is dangerous. Yes, too much potassium is dangerous, but you need to eat an unthinkable amount of bananas to even be at risk. I was only having 4 a day at most and I ate a lot of dates, oranges, and melons. I ate at least 2,000 cals a day which is something I would only do if I were binging.
Now, having been off this lifestyle for a few weeks, I'm purging more than usual and the days that I don't purge are filled with me at least attempting to purge. The food I am eating is making me miserable!
I am 21 years old and just because I live at home does not mean that my parents should have any say concerning the type of food I eat. I am paying for my food with money that I have earned, so I will not let them get in the way of me and my health anymore. This post is more of a rant than anything, but feel free to add your own opinions and life experiences in the comments! :)

Permalink Reply by Cheryl on May 28, 2012 at 11:23am Hi, good luck, and keeping eating those bananas! I probably eat about 20 every day. I would suggest getting Fat to Fabulous by Allison Andrews. It's such a great book, and a number of the testimonials were from people with disordered eating habits. I'm not crazy about the title though. Anyway, it's great. I've had it for a month and read it at least 5 times.
Permalink Reply by RawConsciousness on May 28, 2012 at 11:43am lol its ridiculous how people can think that 4 bananas is too much , how can that fuel your body the whole day? restricting calories NEVER works and NEVER will, I mean you dont see a monkey just eat 2 bananas and let the rest go bad, you dont see sharks eat half a fish and leave the rest there, or see lions eat certain part of an antelope and let the rest go bad , no thats not how nature works, the only reason why we stress over our calorie intake its because a LONG time ago we developed this sense of rationality(god knows how) but anyways thats another story lol. What I mean is that you shouldn't worry about carbs! as long as they're coming from fresh fruits and vegetables you'll be fine! just keep pushin that on your parents until they get it ;)
Permalink Reply by ORGANIC811LFRV on May 28, 2012 at 11:48am You need home-front support. See if you can find someone, like a friend, that lives nearby that you can at least talk to and understands the truth behind this diet. Also, you need to eat/drink 1 lb of greens per day. If you don't you will have some issues. Greens are golden on this path.
I quit many years ago and suffered for years afterwards on the SAD program. Just because of no support and having others around me be UNsupportive. Not fun!
We want you to succeed. This support site is great to help you succeed. However, you need to get someone on your end. This is sooo important.
You didn't rant. You reached out. This means you are trying to find a solution to this situation. Kudos!
Permalink Reply by Vincent Franzen on May 28, 2012 at 11:58am I am not living at home but my family was still concerned. After a few months of continued conversations I decided to shut everyone up with bloodwork. I went to the doc and my bloodwork came back nearly perfect (everything was in range, but Vit D was low). Luckly I dug up my old bloodwork (pre-vegan) and had that to compare. After proving my point with the bloodwork, they have backed off and are more supportive. Just an idea.
Permalink Reply by Raul Fillo on May 28, 2012 at 12:16pm Thanks everyone! I usually price-match on fruit, but my parents are taking the local ads with them to do their own shopping trip, so I asked my mom to buy me a few things. I said, "could you get me about 10 kiwi?" (among other things) and she said, "as long as you don't let them go bad..." and I said that I wouldn't...I use them in my banana smoothies and the only reason they went to waste last time is because she went on a crazy banana rant. She didn't respond when I told her that she needs to stop hating on bananas lol, so I think she got the point! =D
Permalink Reply by Raul Fillo on May 28, 2012 at 12:27pm Oh, and a question...I have bananas in the freezer already peeled in a bowl. They've been there for no more than 2 months. They are brown. Do they still have nutrients??
Permalink Reply by CocoSofia on May 28, 2012 at 1:14pm Jeje I would not eat that even if you pay me to ! How difficult to get fresh nanners? :)
Permalink Reply by Raul Fillo on May 28, 2012 at 1:27pm It's extremely difficult to buy fresh bananas. They only sell under-ripe ones in the store and they take at least 2 or 3 days to ripen. Ideally, I'd like to eat fresher bananas, but I'm wondering if the ones in my freezer are still safe?
