# Whats to explain?

You believe Hershel Walker eats 300 cals a day LMAO!!

BRO!

# 4000cals is enough for a runner whose main events are under 10 mins. If I were Tim and suffered from the insomnia and depression  he currently does (TVO talks about it in his latest vids), Id up my carb cals and get more rest and have a break from racing. Being so lean for so long aint healthy for the mind. Doesnt matter how well we eat if we dont get enough cals and rest.

Took me a while to learn that one.

lol... Ok Hershel was a bad example . lol. But... TVO is winning . Lets say for argument sake he's getting 4000... which he's not... Im curious how its working physiologically .?? He hasn't lost any muscle and his endurance is improving .

Hey

TVO doesn't actually track his calories does he? I would be interested to actually get a one month track of his actual food intake documented on cronometer. Often people inaccurately estimate their calorie intakes, or discount irregularities in their eating habits. Doesn't he have a bit of a thing for lara bars or am I confusing him with someone else?

It is possible he eats a certain way regularly, then eats higher calories for periods.

It is also possible he has adapted to lower intakes of calories (which is possible, though to what extent is unknown, especially on a low protein diet, and it does seem to vary for each person). However the fact that he experiences depression and insomnia means that it is possible he is undereating some of the time.

That having been said, insomnia is a common sign of depression and although nutrients (macro particularly, but also micro) are important for mood stabilisation, they are not the sole factor. He might be missing out on not just nutrition needs, but also possibly some other emotional needs. Or he might be carrying high residual anxiety levels from past trauma. We don't know his individual circumstances.

I would always say though, that it is better not to make assumptions about what he actually eats, until you have actually seen a documented track of his food intake over an extended period, along with weight tracking and performance tracking.

There could be theoretical explanations for why he might be doing well in some ways on a lower calorie diet. But at the moment, I am not clear on what his apparently lower calorie diet actually looks like all of the time. So it seems pointless exploring hypotheses when we don't even know whether what we are theorising about is an actual observation based in fact.

Take care

TVO said he can demolish 40 lara bars in a sitting in one of his vids. That sounds about right.

TVO aint an endurance athlete. He is more of a 10 min specialist. He knows how to suffer for sure.

Ive got a half marathon on Sunday. I will drink a cup of water and a date. People will then say 'wow! I know this guy that just eats a date and a sip of water and he runs sub 81 min HM's!'

People dont get the full story. People say I just live on bananas. I seen TVO eat 1500cals of durian at woodstock. The brother can eat. We all can. Cos TVO's distances are so short, he is never gonna run out of glycogen in 99% of his events so doesnt have to be so sure to get enough.

Me? I do so much during the day that I have to eat or you guys would never hear from me again lol!

I've noticed this a lot since Harley has mentioned it but a lot of the gurus are massively under eating.

I was watching a video last night of Dan the Man from 2010. He was crying on video. Not because someone passed. Because some people on youtube judged him for getting a free micro thing facelift (sorry can't remember the techinical name). We tend to take things personally when we are undercarbed and can't process our emotions.

How many cals does Dan the Man eat per day? Who knows... he doesn't keep track. Massively under eating on carbs.

When we under eat on carbs, stress, chronic fatigue, depression, eating disorders become apparent.

Hey Derek

It is true that we can take things more personally when we are undercarbed. However there are other factors too remember. If we are undersleeping (due to alarm clocks, schedules etc), or have been failing to meet other emotional needs, or have been subjected to recent traumas (whether major or minor), or have not been problem-solving effectively and allowing problems to build up, we may find we are over-sensitive.

Diet is a major component in mental health, but it is not the only component. I always thing it is best not to make too many blanket assumptions about what is going on for a person behind the camera scenes.

That having been said, I don't know a lot about Dan the man. I don't really follow his videos. I find him to be a little over-exaggeratedly excitably, like Matt Monarch. Although he seems like a nice guy with his heart in the right place.

He doesn't seem to have lost weight. Weight loss is a normal symptom of undereating on carbs. However it is possible that he is making up for it with more protein somehow.

I think he is a great guy with his heart in the right place. I just look at him objectively through my 80/10/10 eyes.

He's even mentioned in other videos where he goes on these binges and just eats whatever. This shows me that hes undereating then has to catch up later which is probably why hes been able to maintain his weight.

For someone who is a leader in the raw food health scene, I would only have to assume that he has his head on straight in terms of beliefs. Then again I may be wrong. I know that when I undereat and have seen others do the same (especially in this forum) we tend to take everything super personally.

That's why I'm making those statements. I'm not trying to bash the guy or throw him under the bus, I think he just needs to learn how to eat some more.

TVO seems like a huge mystery to me. I don't think he is telling the whole story. The math just doesn't add up to me.

Hey

Ah yes, if he is binging it is certainly possible he is undereating.

I am interested in how you know that others on the forum are undereating and taking things personally. Are you talking about people you know in 'real life' as well, or are you just imagining that they are undereating based on your perceptions of their posts?

Personally, I think that peoples reactions to blood sugar dips tends not to be caused by the blood sugar dips, but revealed by them. Wayne Dyer has a good saying that I like: "Circumstances do not make a man - they reveal him". I think that different stressors, whether they are physiological (eg. caused by diet), psychological (eg. caused by our own thoughts), environmental (eg. caused by triggers from different events or people in our lives) tend to reveal the learned behavioural responses to stress that we have acquired. So I think that undereating can reveal hyper-sensitivities to stress that someone might already have, but that other forms of stress can reveal this too, even in the presence of sufficient food.

Stress is just the presence of stress hormones in the bloodstream at the end of the day. There are lots of causes of that - undereating is just one of those causes. How we then react and respond to that is learned behaviour. Eating enough is important, so we can reduce the stress. But we also have to learn how to handle and respond to stressors differently too. Otherwise we are just eternally masking the symptoms by tackling only one of the two parts of stress management (The first is to find ways to remove the environmental triggers, where possible, to make it easier to learn to manage the stress by engaging the cognitive brain more, which gets cut off in favour of automated responses when we are highly stressed. The second is to learn to reduce our own stress levels, by engaging the cognitive brain, improving problem-solving skills, avoiding procrastination and learning how to calm our own system down - such as with breathing, internal dialogue etc).

Sure, I didn't get any malice from your post. I didn't imagine you were bashing him or anything. And I agree from what you have said it is possible it may be an issue for him. I just wanted to highlight the fact that mind-reading about what is going on for someone might not always be accurate. And that not everything is about eating enough/not enough (although it very often is an important factor, so I wouldn't want to discourage you or anyone from acknowledging or highlighting that).

I agree, I don't think TVO is telling the whole story. Particularly if what Harley says is true that he can polish off 40 larabars in one sitting. That is an astonishing amount of calories in one burst.

If you look how muscular DTM used to be and now he has lost a LOT of weight and thats cool cos thats what he is cool with.

Each to their own. Some guys are sick of eating enough to keep the muscle around and want to focus more on spiritual stuff. Fair enough.

I have been intrigued by this as well... and believe me... I have tried that route.....I have to say it does not work.   If I want to do very little.. and idle along.. eating quite little can work.

Hershel  eats only 1 solid meal per day - sips on OJ during the day.. I have read.... he also has some serious mental issues....hmmmm   He NEVER used to eat on gameday.... not at Georgia... not playing for the Dallas Cowboys...

His solid meal of the day is likely quite large...and I venture he has adapted to storing more glycogen..... or he is a closet eater... not sure why he would lie about it.. however.

Recently... he says his 1 meal is a fruit smoothie.... before that.. I guess he used to eat bread and veggies... I venture he will not be able to sustain on a fruit smoothie.

Does he really does it? I mean he is severely depressed, not very stable, does not want to train, he is even forcing himself to put on a shirt before he goes out for running ... To track his calories is not that hard since he eats almost the same stuff every day all day. He once said he consumes cca 2500 cals. I find it to be quite optimistic number. ... ANd man, when i eat this amount on raw food I am depressed and sooner or later I take some comfort food (meaning high fat) That is all I know from my experience.

His latest series of videos have been incredible to watch.  Check them out if you haven't... http://www.youtube.com/user/runningraw

Yesturday when I was watching one of his videos I was wondering how he could possibly be able to maintain his bodyweight on what he claims to be eating and how on Earth he could still be exercising like he is if he truly is only sleeping a couple hours a night or not at all.

Although I don't know Tim personally I believe that he is an honest person and don't in any way think that he is "lying", but I get the feeling that he thinks that "Lara Bars" don't count or something.

I just hope that he is going to be ok.  He has such a great mind and talent.  The world certainly could use more people like Tim.

How could he not have a girlfriend or some really close friends to spend time with right now?
