Earlier this week, I made a smoothie with frozen raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. For the sake of money/energy savings, I keep my fridge and freezer on warmer temperature settings. Yeaaaah, so it turns out my bag of berries wasn't totally frozen and got moldy. I didn't recognize this because A. The bag wasn't transparent and B. I always just dump frozen fruit straight into merky medjool date water without really seeing what it looks like.
I definitely knew it tasted off. It was bitter. I chalked it up to overly ripe bananas and choked down the whole 1.5 liter beast throughout my work day. For almost two days, I felt an insane chronic fatigue. Almost fell asleep driving and while at work several different times - two things I would never do no matter how tired I was. I didn't know if it was poor sleep cycles, a B12 issue, recent stress, or what. I just couldn't figure out what the deal was until this morning when I when to make a smoothie and peaked inside the bag before stabbing away at it to break off some frozen chunks. All the red and black colors were replaced by green and grey fuzziness. Then it clicked.
Just like you have to look on the inside of a date for dirt, you gotta look on the inside of frozen fruit/veggie bags before just assuming it's good to go. Oh, and then the whole "don't eat sweet fruit that tastes like vomit-inducing bitterness." Who knew, right? lol. I've been feeling way better today, so no worries on that front. Just passing along my little fruity life lessons - regardless of how embarrassing they may be.
Have a good weekend, and thanks for not eating hen periods to somehow symbolize and commemorate God.
Permalink Reply by Chanda Esparza on April 7, 2012 at 12:35pm I didn't know you should look inside dates for dirt... Is that even if they are not pitted?
I'm glad you're feeling better!
Permalink Reply by mathyou on April 7, 2012 at 12:59pm The only dates I can get my hands on require manual pitting. I don't know if it's dirt or mold, but it's black and looks like soil. I used to bite into dates until I hit one of those. Yuck! Now I tear em.
Thanks! For comparison's sake, I feel super energetic, alert, and happy right now compared to two days ago, and I'm only running on 4.5 hours of sleep! That mold did not mess around! Haha.
Permalink Reply by Lauren Anderson on December 18, 2012 at 7:45am I bite right into a date like that once, the inside looked and tasted like cigarette ashes. And looked like little insect droppings in it too. Sooo disgusting. :p

Permalink Reply by Sweetfruitlover on April 7, 2012 at 12:44pm I know I should check my dates but I'm too lazy and I haven't had a bad experience yet - after consuming probably around 100 pounds of dates in the past couple years.
And mathyou, I'm so sorry you had this experience! But I had to smile at your account of it, and I appreciate the warning too. Thx for sharing.
Permalink Reply by mathyou on April 7, 2012 at 1:09pm Then you're on a hot streak! Hey, I wouldn't either if I had those odds. I've maybe had only 5 or 6 like that since I started eating them a year ago but still hate risking acquiring taste aversion.
Everyone stop with the sympathy!!! This experience was a blessing. I didn't get seriously ill (vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) or have to go to the hospital or anything. Tomorrow morning when I wake up "tired," it won't even feel the way tired used to anymore. I basically bumped my tired tolerance levels immensely - for the time being anyway. :P
Permalink Reply by Michelle N on April 7, 2012 at 1:49pm Thanks for the warning as I keep my fridge on low too. I bit into a medjool date this morning and it was black inside (mold?) and disgusting. Immediately spit it out. It was the only one in the package like that but I cut open the rest of them. From now on I will be opening dates with knives or fingers before tasting! I almost considered giving them up for good b/c I was so grossed out, but then came to my senses. I love dates!
Permalink Reply by mathyou on December 18, 2012 at 10:05am I remember feeling that way too. Luckily, I made myself eat another one and fell back in love with them.
Youcha. Glad to hear you made it out of that ok, good think you're hcrv! Reminds me of the last time I was in a bar (to see some music)and asked for a large oj. I took a huge swig of apparantly fermented juice and at first thought someone had spiked my drink. Luckily (for me, not my companions) I was able to spit it all out :)
