Discovered reason for my failure to thrive on LFRV: Genetic disorder affecting B12, Folate, & Protein Metabolism

Hey all,

I haven't been posting in awhile because I've been ill with an autoimmune condition that caused me to develop a EMF sensitivity for the first time in my life (now I know for sure that cell phones are bad for people.. I can FEEL the radiation now..crazy!) but I thought you all might find it interesting that I discovered why I wasn't ever able to thrive or keep weight on eating LFRV despite years of diligently trying.

A couple of months ago my adrenal and endocrine systems crashed and I ended up in the hospital... many, many tests and specialists later I find that I have a genetic mutation called MTHFR that interferes with my bodies' ability to use B12, folate and protein. It also blocks detoxification pathways which is most likely why I got CFS and fibromyalgia years ago to begin with.

At first I was very opposed to the idea of supplementation but I already had to get on BHRT (bio-identical hormone replacement therapy) anyway since I was dying due to lack of hormones (my body is apparently just not able to produce any with the little protein it's able to utilize now) but I realized that while the teachings of NH are very valuable it's important to be open to some intervention in certain cases.. apparently as in cases of genetic mutations.

Now that I know I have this problem I'm on a special protocol of methyl B12 and methyl folate supplementation in high dosages and the theory is that after six months to a year of this I should be much better overall.

I'm still mostly LFRV (indulge in some some pastuerized OJ and salsa sometimes) but now need to avoid folate even in natural forms (much less greens for me in the future)... but that's a whole 'nother post... :-)

I just wanted to remind others that sometimes diet doesn't heal all and more investigation is necessary although I definitely believe that eating LFRV IS the best diet that supports the best health in general overall....just don't always rely on diet alone to fix everything. :-)

Good for you Audrey... and great point.   Most folks will heal up on this diet... (and McDougall for that matter)... some will not - some damage cannot be "undone"... or atleast will take years and years.

diet is small. Early nights, sun, fun and living with purpose can often be bigger when it comes to health.

Too many people focus just on diet but they forget the other facets of life that play a role in our daily nutrition. Doesnt matter how well you eat if you dont eat enough, dont get early nights, dont do sport, dont get sun fun etc.

It's commonly said that you get the most restorative sleep earlier in the evening. From 9pm to 12pm specifically for the adrenal and endocrine system I've read. There are many published studies about the effects of odd sleeping hours on shift workers health. Apparently our bodies are still on a more natural rhythm and prefer to go to sleep when the sun goes down.

That makes sense but is also questionable because in summer the sun goes down after 10pm and in winter before 4pm. Should we go to bed with chickens ;) ?

I guess you could argue that we were not meant to live this far north, where ever that may be. I live on Salt Spring in Canada and know how dark the winters are and how bright the summers are. Left to our own natural state, humans would die in these conditions. With minimal clothing and shelter that we could make with our own two hands, much like any animal would, we would only survive, much less thrive, in the tropics. The sun goes to bed around 6/7pm or so and it would make sense that we would soon follow so around 8pm and get up around 7/8am as well with the natural rhythm of the sun. Giving us a beautiful 12 hours of sleep. Of course where we live now can most definitely affect us so I'd say try your hardest to get to bed early, and when you feel like you're tired and need more sleep, take it! 

Hi Chantal, thanks for your time.  I agree that it would be the best to live in tropics but there is so many human animals on this poor little Planet now that we have no choice but to spread and that only few will ever thrive in a perfect place to live.

I usually go to bed 2-4 am and sleep (if possible) till 2 pm. I don't like mornings at all. I don't even talk to people in the morning :) Two times a week I need to get up at 5am and it is a real torture for me as I only get 2-3 hours sleep (if any - I am very nervous when I need to get up early).

Maybe I am some kind of the nocturnal animal :)

When you say high doses of methyl B12, how high are they per day? I am asking because I read that recent scientific evidence points out to high-does supplementing being effective even for those with digestive issues (which traditionally would just inject B12).
