30 Bananas a Day!

Ok so I've been raw for 2 weeks or so now.. and was wondering, other then digestion (as long as I stick to the 80/10/10 formula) are grains really that bad?

I guess my main question here is: Will grains (sticking 80/10/10) somehow make me fat? Is it really unhealthy?

@Ted,

Grains are only recommended as an emergency food, and are not optimal foods.  I am going to give you some homework here which hopefully will FUD you away from grains!  :D

Yes, over consumption of grains can make some sensitive individuals fat and unhealthy.

Problems with grains and all starchy foods like beans and legumes, potatoes and tubers and starchy vegetables are as follows:

Vitamin C and Nutrient Deficiencies
Cooking Decreases Nutrients
Common Toxins in Starchy Foods
Importance of Calcium
Poor Calcium Phosphorus Ratios
High in Protein
High Blood Sugar and Hyperinsulinsm
Promotion of Weight Gain
Problems With Whole Grains
Starchy Foods and Oral Problems

Grains, starchy foods, and cruciferous veggies are high in oxalate.  Common problems with oxalate consumption are:

breathing difficulty, burning in the mouth, burning in the throat, coma, diarrhea, eye pain, kidney stones, nausea, red-colored urine, seizures, stomach pain, vomiting, and weakness, esophagitis, slurred or unintelligible speech, laryngeal edema, pain and edema in the tongue.

Oxalic acid poisoning may involve the following symptoms: abdominal pain, burns and blisters if acid contact is made, collapse, convulsions, kidney problems, low blood pressure, mouth pain, shock, throat pain, tremors, vomiting, and weak pulse.

If extremely high doses of oxalate are consumed, death can result.

For best results, eat simple meals, but a rainbow of fruits over a period of time, with 3k or more calories a day and supplement with 1/2 -2 pounds of lettuce greens.

Thanks for the reply.

if grains and tubers are so bad? then why are the longest living population of people in the world living off grains?? Look into the Okinawa's....

There is no such thing as bad and good. The Okinawans were living much longer than the Americans because they were eating a diet that was lower in fat and protein, cleaner, less processed, etc. Someone who eats potatoes will live longer than someone who eats burgers, and someone who eats watermelons will live longer than someone who eats potatoes. Generally speaking. No one's trying to say they're "good" or "bad."

I think that's invaluable insight!  thank you

What are your thoughts on the Okinawa's, PK?

Check out the HCCV discussion forum, there's many people on this site eating grains/cooked food as a second resort, and for some its enjoyed. A lot of them could also give you feedback on the high carb low fat cooked food diet. :)

i too am interested in pk thoughts on Okinawa  i know they grow a lot of citrus there oranges rock on

One of the civilizations used as example for why the 80/10/10 (approximate) ratio leads to better health than a high-fat or high-protein diet.

Other civilizations besides the Okinawans that are used are the vilcabambans and the hunzas. Also Drs. Barnard and Esselstyn have some studies on heart disease and diabetes sample groups that show an 80/10/10 ratio to be superior to diets that are higher in fat and protein.

Hey there Ted!!! I dunno about every individual...but for me, I actually lost weight and bloating when I included potatoes, and brown rice at din~din... even barley and oats too now!!! It may just be a 'season' for me and then I'll slowly get back into 100% raw, but I am more satisfied including grains, I don't feel soooo crazy hungry, as I did when eating fruits and veggies exclusively... I loved all the fruit, but it really was never enough, I felt like a psycho hoarding my fruit all the time! lol  and I would always feel water logged and filled~to~the~brim by the end of the day.. So, yes,  I think,  especially for men, you could include starches and not gain, maintain or even lose... Just don't add any questionable condiments or fats...lol

When I started out on this way~o~eating, I was so stubborn and prideful, and never though I would eat any other way, but I have been humbled and realize not everything in life is black and white. I will not eat animals that is a constant, but as far as raw and cooked, and whole foods go... I am happy with my starch~ys!!! :)  I used to be in bondage to my diet, and feel like a failure when I caved on cooked.. now life is goooood and I enjoy my food!!!! :)

Just look at the other low fat high carb books and docs out there,  Dr. Michael Klaper , Dr Esselstyn, Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. McDougall... they seem to be thriving and are quite slim!!! These men have been eating this way for years!! Even DurianRider says it's the next best thing to 30 Nanas a Day!

   Just my 2 cents ;)

I think the one grain I would never go back to is wheat. I've noticed a big improvement since I haven't touched it.  Rice and oatmeal have always been easier on the digestive system.  For some reason I can't understand, I find too many cooked potatoes makes me feel that my blood sugar has been spiked - but I have no idea why.

Ooooh I agree Lisa! I only had the whole grain barley twice, which actually has gluten in it too...it didn't effect me, but maybe if I had it on regular bases I would start having problems.. I agree gluten free is a good way to go!!! I feel amazing on brown rice! Even better then potatoes for sure, and sweet potatoes are my next go~to carb! ;)
