Hi there!
I just joined this site with my goal being that I want to eat more fruit! I am currently a vegan and yesterday, when I joined the site, I managed to go all raw and I've been eating raw so far today! However, I am wondering how many calories I should eat while eating this way? I never used to count calories because I knew I was getting enough while eating whole grains/soy products, but now I've been seeing posts about eating 3000 calories a day and I'm wondering if that's really supposed to apply to every person, regardless of age, physical activity, etc? I'm 19, 5'8 and 125 pounds. I walk a lot and do yoga. I've been finding it hard to eat 1200 calories a day so far (I'm going shopping for more fruit tomorrow though, so that should help!). If someone could explain this to me or point me in the right direction I would be very grateful! Thank you!!

Freelee & I do. You will NEVER see us limit our cals. You will NEVER see us out training every day either. If it is cold out or we have a sore muscle or don't feel like it we just sit back on our computers stuffing our faces with all we care for. Its quite funny reading all the hate comments on the net about us being 'too thin' yet we are eating more cals than most and laughing all the way. ;) I could literally spend a few hours and screen shot over 2000 comments that say along the lines of 'your too skinny #%^@$^%$!!!'

Permalink Reply by Esra on July 26, 2012 at 1:35pm I'm 5'4", 110ish pounds. I eat ~2500cals daily and more like ~3000cals when I'm running around ALL day and doing a lot of work. I have a pretty active life, and I don't mean that I exercise daily, but I walk/take public transport to anywhere I have to be, and I like to walk around and have fun. At the beginning of this lifestyle I tracked my calories everyday to make sure I got at least 2300 calories in, and now I just eat until I'm satisfied, and every once in a while I log my info in just to check how I'm doing.
I've been doing this lifestyle for over a year, and my weight has stayed the same (it was the same before going HCRV too).
My primary calories sources are bananas (daily!), mangoes (when available), and oranges. I also make sure to get all my vitamins and minerals with a big salad with fruits, veggies and greens at the end of the day. I eat three meals a day, with rarely any snacking in between. I usually have ~1000 calories for breakfast, ~1000 calories for lunch, and ~500 calories for dinner.
Just start slow. If you're living in 1200 calories of fruit right now you WILL get hungry pretty soon, and will increase your calories big time. Just make sure you have fruit around for when that happens, so that you don't eat the other stuff :). Good luck! If you need any help with meal suggestions and general tips send me a message.

I think unlimited calories is more the mindset I am looking for! I hate counting calories and getting away from it has been a healthy thing for me, so I would hate to go back to it. Also Durianrider, you look great and have awesome muscle tone, I don't know how anyone could say you were too thin (unless they are just jealous!) Thanks for the advice!
Vicki, I do need to read 80/10/10. Checking to see if my library has it right now......
Thanks also to Esra! I will most likely be in touch!

Permalink Reply by Ruby on July 27, 2012 at 3:47am In 80/10/10 by Douglas Graham it says:
1st Multiply your body weight by 10. That is you BMR (basal metabolic rate, the number of calories you need just to keep your body functioning)
2nd Multiply that by two if you are athletic and that should be the LEAST amount of calories eat in a day.
OR If you work a pretty sedentary job add 200 to your BMR. If you have a physically demanding job add 800-1,600. And for every workout session add 300-600. And that should all be the LEAST amount of calories to aim for.
But to simplify it all, just go with what feels good and never restrict, like Durian Rider says.
Permalink Reply by banana - boy on July 27, 2012 at 4:07am Durian Rider says it best ! eat till ya drop man , no one ever suggested a thing like that ! So I tried it 7 weeks ago. BEST THING IN WORLD ! no way to tell ya about it TRY IT and see for your self how it feels THEN youll know....its wonderful and fun...STUFF YOUR FACE !!!!!( with fruit) doug
Before I ever came to this website I used the whole Base Metabolic Rate calculation a lot (its said to subtract 500 a day to loose 2lbs... yada yada). I think the big appeal of this style of eating though is yea, gorge yourself however you please.
I haven't read 80/10/10 either D:, but have never heard BMR expressed as body weight x 10 (that seems a little low, but hey the mans onto somethin so maybe he's right).
Everyone hates counting calories so I'm pretty interested in just eating what I want, when I want. I don't really know though how the abundance of calories doesn't adversely effect your weight (probably mentioned in the book) but I do know that with the whole sugar debate that slow sugars (fruit) react wonderfully and without damage to our body like refined sugar.
Permalink Reply by Kayla Marie on July 27, 2012 at 11:07am I'm guessing it's something to do with fruit being so easy for our bodies to digest, so the calories are burned more quickly, thus: we can eat more of them! :)
Permalink Reply by Emmie on July 27, 2012 at 9:27am "Eat more to live more" is what Harley says, and it's true, you get more energy, you enjoy doing what you do, you can do whatever you want (swimming, riding your bike, running, thinking...) I struggled with eating disorders for a long long time so reminding me that sentence helps me a lot. I never felt that good !
I feel a lot better if I eat more.
Permalink Reply by Kayla Marie on July 27, 2012 at 11:05am Emmie, I connect with that a lot! What a great quote. I also struggled with disordered eating for about 6 months and it was a nightmare that I never want to repeat. "Eat more to live more"... I love it! :)
