Ok..I feel like I'm going to be destroyed for asking this lol..but this is my first week transitioning into this diet and I'd like to do it right so I don't give it a bad name (my parents think I'm crazy and I'd like to prove them wrong with some good results! both of them think I shouldn't be eating more than 1000 cals u_u). I've heard over and over to eat until you're full on this diet, as much fruit as you want. I've heard that I won't gain weight eating only fruit. HOWEVER, I would like to LOSE a little bit of fat (I've never had an eating disorder, and am not overly thin or overweight, but I'm not where I'd like to be and definitely have fat to lose). I've been following cronometer, and it's saying I should be eating about 1700 calories per day..I did that today, and I was starving all day. I only had one 300 calorie cooked lentil soup, the rest was fruits (bananas, mangos, and a melon) with a few veggies. I'm conflicted because I haven't been able to work out much lately due to an injury..should I ignore what cronometer says I should eat and just eat until I'm full?
I really apologize if this question is incredible silly, I haven't gotten the 80/10/10 book yet :(

Unless you are six years old 1000 calories is no where near what your body needs. There are anorexics who only eat 1000 calories a day. It is absolute starvation and sets a person up for malnutrition/deficiences. I hope your parents are able to understand that and support you once they have seen how wonderfully healthy and glowing you become.
It is imperative you intake enough calories on this lifestyle. Here is an excellent explanation:

To be healthy, happy, and physically active you must make sure you are eating enough (which is 2500+ for females, I personally aim for 3000 as my minimum and go upwards of 6000 depending on how active I plan on being the next day).
We promote the use of cronometre because it has an excellent visual representation of what the 80-10-10 ratio looks like in food form. You can ignore the default setting on cronometere. You can adjust them so it is not so visually daunting though. The same goes for the fat/protein/carb ratios, the default settings are much different than 80-10-10.
The issue of weight loss and gain is a somewhat tricky thing to explain on this lifestyle. The basics however is that when intaking the sufficient amount to meet all your dietary needs (alongside physical activity) that your body will naturally settle to it's healthiest state. So if an overweight person eats 3000+ calories, they will lose weight. If someone who is 80lbs and underweight, they will gain weight (though more often it is muscle that is gained long term).
Then we get into the area where I have experience and that is someone who comes from a past of restriction. In these cases, for both men and women, there is a tendancy to gain weight (though it is more often fluid retention and some fat, rather than all fat) during the first year or two. This does not just mean those who have had eating disorders but also yo-yo dieters. The body needs to reset itself and fix internal damage before it focuses on weight loss. So for my first two years I gained around 60lbs (a lot of which was simply rehydration and further fluid retention) and now in my third year I have dropped 30lbs with only ever increasing caloric intake. It is confusing to understand after being told for so long the diet mantra of, "calories in, calories out" for losing weight but it's just not so. I'm not saying this will happen to you, but if it does, be aware that it is 100% temporary.
Here is another excellent explanation:

A lot of people also gain weight (just a few kilos) during the first few months as their body's adjust to the new food intake, rehydration, fluid retention from their muscles finally getting the glucose it craved, etc. But this does not last long and the good majority of people who become HCRV find themselves with their ideal body and mind within the first year.
You're going to do so well and starting off when we're young is the greatest thing we can do for ourselves and your parents will be proud of their wonderfully healthy daughter!
Permalink Reply by Alexandra R. on August 13, 2012 at 11:45pm The MINIMUM for women is 2500; and believe me, eat at least this amount to feel the full benefits of this lifestyle.
I tried eating 80/10/10 on less calories than that (2300), and it really affected my sleep; for WEEKS I had insomnia issues, both getting to sleep and staying asleep. Insufficient calories and less sleep affected my athletic performance, too. But as soon as I started eating OVER 2500 (I typically eat 2700-3000 now) my sleep is great and I fall asleep immediately after I stop reading (around 9:00).
So definitely eat more. You'll be glad you did.
Permalink Reply by Peter Csere on August 14, 2012 at 1:13am Yeah if you eat more fruit you will lose fat. This is not calorie restriction. You do not restrict calories to lose weight. You eat your species-specific diet and you exercise. What species are you, and what's your favorite kind of cardiovascular exercise? There you go. Cows don't get fat eating grass and grazing, and bonobos don't get fat climbing trees and stuffing fruit down their throats. No one's there telling them to restrict calories or they will get fat.
Your parents apparently want you to die. Also, cronometer's recommendations is based on the calorie-restriction model of weight loss which doesn't work well, as we've seen in America.
Permalink Reply by Rachel Ross on August 14, 2012 at 1:48am Thanks guys! I really appreciate the responses! :) Do you guys think that having the cooked soup makes a huge difference? or is it fine in transition? I'm partially still in scared of calorie mode lol I've overcome a lot of society's lies (dairy being good for you..yikes u_u) and I guess this is just another one I'll have to get used to. I mean, I've seen the results, so I know that If I don't get good results I'm probably doing something wrong.
My mom has definitely been anorexic, I'd say she eats 500 calories a day max (of dairy too @__@), and my dad just did personal training school so he's all about what he's learned in there (calories in calories out, protein, etc.), and they're ALL about weight loss. I REALLY want to be healthy and on a healthy diet, and hopefully if I look better they'll realize what they should be eating too and be healthier. I'm about 5'4 and 120 pounds right now, I hope to get toned and lose some of that weight or stay the same while losing fat and gaining muscle. I really don't care about my WEIGHT, but really don't want to get any more jiggly lol. I really don't know if I'd be able to handle gaining even 10 pounds of fat u_u so I hope that doesn't happen :/
I haven't been active the past couple days I've been doing this either because I hurt my foot (getting used to the vibrams..heh) but I'll definitely feel better about eating the calories then. Should I still eat that many calories on days that I'm not active? I'm assuming so since I was soo hungry. It would be easier if I didn't live at home and could just show up one day all glowing and healthy xD but I'll do the best I can! Fruit shopping later :) Thanks again guys!!! So glad I found this place.
Permalink Reply by Alexandra R. on August 14, 2012 at 2:14am The sodium in the soup may be causing your body to retain water... Instead, try making a raw tomato gazpacho (use celery for a salty flavor) and then add the plain cooked lentils maybe. I did that when I was transitioning, and it was really good. :)
But yeah, you may want to really talk to your mom about what she's doing. I was eating that much when I was diagnosed as "anorexic".
But I know how you feel about the weight gain. I hate it, and I hope it ends soon. I mean, I understand WHY I gained weight, after restricting to 400-600 calories a day for a year gaining weight on ANY diet was inevitable. But I feel SO jiggly. And I exercise a TON. You just have to be patient, though. Keep telling yourself to be patient with your body; you have to undo any damage done first. I actually started crying today when trying on new clothes because I HATE HATE HATE how big /flabby I've gotten, but right now I'm just telling myself to keep up with the lifestyle; after all, Freelee said she remained at her heaviest even after being on this lifestyle for a year.
I'd suggest swimming for cardio if your foot hurts, and also include strength exercises. Oh, and rest days. Someone recently suggested to me on here that I work in more strength & take at least one rest day a week to get rid of the jiggle. I'm not heavy (I try not to weigh myself, as its potentially triggering); If I had to guess I'd say I'm 110-115 ish at ~5'5. I'm just jiggly! I guess I focus too much on cardio, though..
Permalink Reply by Rachel Ross on August 14, 2012 at 3:50am I really don't think I've been calorie restricting too much before this diet..only at the start of this summer have I started counting calories and trying to get about 1200 a day. Before that, I wasn't exercising AT ALL and eating almost all starches and and dairy. I would eat about 6 servings of mashed potatoes in one sitting while studying lol (totally a carbitarian) I used to gain weight super easy when I ate meat 3 years ago and was shocked when I didn't gain any when I was eating all those carbs..but that makes this lifestyle make even more sense to me I guess! So hopefully my body doesn't have a HUGE amount of recovering to do @_@ We'll see though I guess. Alexandra, that's like my goal and I'm only 5'4! haha Everyones body's different though I guess, my friend is super toned and weighs like 135 at 5'5, so weight really means nothing. That's definitely not my concern, but if I have to buy new pants that'll be depressing >.> And I've tried to talk to my mom about it before, but it doesn't work. I think the only thing that will is having results myself, because my whole family is still very into calorie restriction and losing weight and they all think i'm crazy eating more than one banana for breakfast lol
