30 Bananas a Day!

Hey I was recently on the main room chat and got a question about calorie needs (which I wasn't able to answer very well, and reverted to posting a video of doug's).
Questions:

1.) Is the 2500 calories for women and the 3000 for men suppose to maintain weight?

2.) I've always used the subtract 500 calories a day for two pounds of weight loss a week style idea, is this incorrect? Does 811 promote a different way of calorie shortage to lose weight or something?

3.) *Most important* - How does more calories not result in more weight gain? I've heard many people saying I eat 3500, 4000, 4000+ calories a day (is this to gain weight or is there something else going on here).

Thank you for your time and help.

Well, as for the third question, the reason that so many people eat so many calories (myself included) is often because of a higher metabolism and/or a higher activity level. Sure, some people may be trying to gain weight with that many calories, but I'm pretty sure that a lot of people are maintaining. I eat 3500-4000 calories a day, and I'm 16 years old, 103lbs, and 5'4''. I have a fast metabolism (even before my eating disorder), and I'm fairly active--so I need that much. Of course, at this weight, gaining wouldn't be a bad thing, to a certain extent, so I'm not exactly worried about that.

Well yea that makes sense and all, I have a faster metabolism as well but still wanted to know what an 811 advocate would recommend for calories to lose weight.

Well, my point was (indirectly) that it really depends upon the person. There is no set amount that's good for everyone. Have you been maintaining at a certain amount? I'm sure any amount of calories that you cut out is fine--as long as it isn't too much and you still get proper nutrients and don't lose too quickly or anything, and enough to see measurable results. Maybe exercise more?

@GetFitVegan,

Eat the required calories over the course of 1-2 months and take an average of weight. I am not talking about freaking out because two cups of water translates into one pound on the scale.  I mean something like weighing on the same day every month and seeing what the results are.

If someone is underweight, they should increase calories and or exercise to build muscle mass.

If someone is obese, and they are losing, that is good.  If there is no weight loss after a month or two, and there is truly a need for weight loss, and not based on an ED, then try increasing exercise.  Going below 2500 calories a day sets one up for deficiency and malnutrition long term.

I've always monitored calories to an extent and have done a bunch of research on it, thats why I was goin for something to debunk what I've always read, or just prove it again.

I've always used the bmr calculations and such to find out calorie expenditure and stuff, I wanted to know if anyone else has a "method" they use for weight loss.

This is getting confusing sounding haha, basically does 811 calories (fruit) not result in fat storage?

@GetFigVegan,

A lot of those diet plans and fancy caloric calculations are bunk.  While on paper they look good, they do not account for the type of food eaten, how it was prepped and how cooking changes things, the health and condition of the individual, etc.

As many of us who have come from other diets know, the first week is usually a honeymoon of weight loss followed by a plateau.  If we are really unlucky, metabolism will slow down to accommodate the restriction leading us to get fatter when we do go for a binge.

Just a vicious cycle.

I would recommend that someone give this a 30 day trial and see what the results are.  Lock the scales up and only weigh in once a month or less.

This diet is a lifestyle and a way of life and about natural health maintenance.

Peace, PK

@GetFitVegan,

You asked:

1.) Is the 2500 calories for women and the 3000 for men suppose to maintain weight?

These are bare minimum requirements to avoid deficiencies and malnutrition.  Most of our members who go below that lose energy, get depressed, are tempted to binge, and start manifesting symptoms of illness.  No worries though, most people can keep a stable weight at this number, and if weight loss is desired, increase exercise a little bit. Many of our members find they need to eat more calories than this.  Learn more here:

Why 2500/3000 Calories a Day?

Having said that, some people do see an increase on the scale while reducing inches.  Reasons include volume of food and water consumed, proper hydration, nutrient dense diet promoting increased bone density and muscle mass, overall healthier and denser body tissues, and fiber in the intestines.

2.) I've always used the subtract 500 calories a day for two pounds of weight loss a week style idea, is this incorrect? Does 811 promote a different way of calorie shortage to lose weight or something?

We never restrict calories or reduce calories to lose weight.  For the most part, the body balances out.  ED and underweight people might gain, and obese people will lose.

On this diet, like everything else about it, most conventional wisdom does not work.

On other diets whether animal products, high fat, or low fat high starchy foods, there is greater risk of weight gain and a need to count calories.  However, on these diets, many people suffer deficiencies, malnutrition, and or side effects like arthritis from the toxic effects of the food consumed.

3.) *Most important* - How does more calories not result in more weight gain? I've heard many people saying I eat 3500, 4000, 4000+ calories a day (is this to gain weight or is there something else going on here).

The minimum is 2500/3000 a day.  But many of our members are also athletes and do a lot of fitness training.  They need to eat more calories, and that is why some of them can eat 3-5k of calories a day and sometimes still lose weight.

I eat 2500-3500 calories a day, I am moderately active, have a job, errands, home life, and I maintain a steady weight on the scale.

Peace, PK

It's true!  You're invaluable!

Wow this removed any last doubt I had about 30BaD and 80/10/10. Even though religiously in my faith, I'm not supposed to eat this much..I've come to the conclusion that this time and age does not allow for those guidelines because of how everything is less nutrient dense, and the increase of chronic disease changes how we once thought of food when it was in its natural state. Thank you PK!

@Madiha,

I hope I satisfactorily addressed you concerns in the Ramadan discussion:D
