30 Bananas a Day!

Hello There banana munchas! My roommate and I eat high carb low fat vegan but usually eat some cooked potatoes beans pasta rice that sort of thing at night. (still working on keeping it completely raw everyday :]) I have no stomach or digestive issues I'm aware of but recently my roommate has been complaining about his stomach pushing out and looking full all the time. It isn't painful or anything but just looks like he is pushing it out when he isn't. I hope someone has a similar experience so i can help him out. THANKS A BUNCH!

It's the cooked foods.

Once you cut them out the bloating goes away.

Thanks for the quick response. That makes a lot of sense. If he was to eat a cooked meal from time to time would potatoes and beans beat rice? It should only be a couple more weeks before we are completely raw but in the meantime...

You should cut out all cooked foods and eat completely Raw. I hope this helps! :-)

@daVeRAW,

This is called starch belly.  Starches are complex carbohydrates, can  only be broken down into glucose promoting elevated blood sugar and elevated insulin levels of which insulin is the fat storage hormone.  In contrast to that, fruits contain simple sugars like fructose of which there is little or no insulin release, and fructose can be broken down into other metabolites as needed by the liver.  Only minimal insulin is required in glucose transport.

Other problem with starchy foods and potatoes include:

Vitamin C and Nutrient Deficiencies
Cooking Decreases Nutrients
Common Toxins in Starchy Foods
Importance of Calcium
Poor Calcium Phosphorus Ratios
High in Protein
High Blood Sugar and Hyperinsulinsm
Promotion of Weight Gain
Problems With Whole Grains
Starchy Foods and Oral Problems

Potatoes are high in the alkaloid solanine which can cause digestive upsets.

Cruciferous, Tuber, and Starchy Vegetables Not Recommended

While some of these vegetables are not against guidelines, they have made some of our members ill and are not recommended as optimum foods.

For optimum digestion, avoid cruciferous veggies like broccoli, kale, spinach, and cauliflower, and root vegetables like carrots, potatoes and tubers, starchy vegetables like beets, grains and bread, and most processed foods.

These foods are high in oxalate which is an irritant causing problems such as burning mouth and throat during consumption, sour stomach, stomach pains, diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, acne and skin eruptions, possible hair thinning and loss, blood in stools, high uric acid, arthritis, kidney stones and kidney problems, urinary pain and or problems, and or slowed digestion which makes it difficult to eat enough calories during the day.

Good luck and I hope your buddy feels better soon. Peace, PK

Slightly off topic, but-

Starchy foods promote weight gain?  What about DR saying that all carbs are good for weight loss?  I'm sure he said that in at least one of his videos..

@Aj,

I should clarify, promote weight gain in some sensitive individuals.  I think what DR is trying to do is help people overcome their carbohydrate fears, and to give people a back up option in case if they do not have access to ripe fruit and greens.  Instead of starving, eating SAD, or animal products, these are second best foods.

However, DR and the whole 30BaD say these are not optimal foods and or health promoting, these are emergency foods.

Eating potatoes one time every once in a while will probably not cause harm, but in sensitive individuals such as myself and the OP's roommate, belly fat and weight gain can occur if they are eaten excessively.

I have explained a little bit why in this blog post:
