I think that looks like mamay on the inside. Some fruits were under ripe or fermented the first time I tried them, so I thought I didn't like them. Try to get them as tree ripened and fresh as possible.
yea, that's totally underripe, the inside should be much darker and more like mashed sweet potatoes so I've heard, I want to try them so badly, I have a tree but it's only 2 feet tall.
that's mamey. it doesn't look very ripe at all. the skin should be fleshier and a deeper color. it's deeeeelicious.
They look ready to me. We have them all over FL here. I find them to be tasteless. Not sure why. I adore the white ones!!
We have them in Costa Rica as well. The good ones taste like a sweet potato or pumpkin pie, the bad ones are just yucky. I hope to try the other zapotes soon!
i initially tasted one right off the tree on a farm in Homestead, and i found it pretty delicious.. then i bought a few at Josh's organic market in Hollywood and brought them back to NJ.. i loved them when i had them in FL but since then they just haven't been appealing.. i may be letting some of them get overripe and ferment cuz they develop this side taste, almost like gasoline or something.. others are just like you said, kinda tasteless.. maybe they just don't ripen off the tree the same way they do when they're picked tree-ripened.. i've been blending them with bananas and sometimes a few dates for a 'chocolate' pudding, but i'm starting to wonder if they're only good for the coloring and the pudding would be better w/o them.. and i agree the white ones are really good
yea sounds like that might've fermented as well.. a friend of mine reported a bad durian tasting this way
i agree about the gasoline-like taste. i got some from josh's as well and i think they were waaaay too ripe, they almost tasted like burnt plastic :(
DUDE where'd you snag these babies? guy at the Asian Market? WOOOOOOOWZA!

How big are they?
i got them at basil bandwagon.. even organic believe it or not.. they're about the size of a small apple
Good score! Have you had them yet?
yeah i used them in smoothies.. these weren't as good as the first time i tried them.. think some of them fermented a bit and they get this really sharp chemical taste when that happens
