30 Bananas a Day!

Hi everyone, myself and my partner are planning on going to Bali to see if it would be a nice place to relocate to. i hear its beautiful, warm seas and tropical climate and fruits with a spiritual vibe to it some people say also.

i was wondering - does anyone know which towns are good/bad for fruits or if it makes much difference?

would love any feedback overall on anyone who has been there. thanks a billion trillion! :D

Ubud is a cool town, there is a market there but I wasn't so 811 when I went, so I didn't really check out the fruit situation from an 811 perspective. I hear you have to go in the morning for fruit. Plenty of supermarkets with tropical fruit, some organics at Bali Buddha, lots of places serving gourmet raw but also smoothies, juices and salads. Lots of yoga and healing type stuff in Ubud too. I like it there a lot, been there twice now. Stay away from Kuta though, that place is a tourist trap.

was there quite long time ago, nice island but quite a lot of traffic at some places...

A lot of monkeys! very green island, lots of fruits, but also lots of tourists at some places...

It is major tourist area, a bit too busy for me, but yes, still beautiful.

Been going to Sumatera since '97 ..... I recommend it over Bali for a number of reasons ....... but if you need to be around a lot of other Western people then maybe Bali is more suited to you .......... got a big gardening project happening in North Sumatera near Bukit Lawang ..... home to 1 of 5 orangutan sanctuaries in the world ...... lots of fresh water rivers flowing off the mountains .... last time we went to the North side of Bali the waterfall was bone dry ???????? Cheaper land prices or just join with the locals ...... Less development pressure ...... Most people are still gardeners .... !!!!!!!!! Yeah I love it .......

I spent a few months on a small island near Manado in North Sulawesi. It is such a beautiful place and lovely people! It is nearly 100% Christian up there and each family owns some land in the "jungle" where they grow bananas, mangoes and coconuts. There is usually a local market in each village where you can buy the durians, lychees, rambutan etc.

However it is hard to live there as a westerner because there is no internet or good phone service, and there are no other westerners. haha

Their diet is interesting because it is FULL of oil (made from coconuts/palm trees I think), they even fry bananas for breakfast, but most of them are quite skinny. It seems like the rich locals are fatter because they can afford more meat.

we dont like the visa thing here in bali and its pretty touristy wherever we've been in lovina and sanur. we hear thailand is 30% cheaper and much easier visa situation. been to thailand?

sounds awesome bout sumatra! ill have to google check to see where sumatra is :P .  blessings.

Hi Jesse, do you have an opinion on Thailand vs Sumatera?

I'm planning a trip to Ubud this coming April.

Since people actually responded to your post. I'm just going to piggy back on yours.
