CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE BEST PLACE TO STORE MY BANANAS. THE FRUIT FLIES CAN'T SEEM TO LEAVE THEM ALONE. MAYBE THEY THINK THEY NEED THEM MORE THAN I DO....

Put Vinegar/Apple Cider Vinegar in a plastic container... put cling wrap on top and ensure it is tight/taught. Wrap an elastic around the container and cling wrap to keep it in place.
Poke a bunch of super teeny holes in the cling wrap... big enough to fit a fruit fly but small enough that they can't freely fly in and out.
The little buggers will smell the vinegar... fly into the container... and never get back out!
I don't like killing them or letting them drown and such... so I usually bring the container outside once or twice a day... gently peel back the cling wrap and let them go! No need to dump out the vinegar... but you may need to put on new cling wrap.
Other than that... they seem to find bananas wherever they are. Some say the eggs are even ON the bananas themselves.... who knows!

Permalink Reply by ♥ Love ♥ on November 18, 2011 at 3:30am anytime! :) i don't see a need to wash them... if eggs are truly on the nanners.. they'd be on the peel. we don't eat the peel so its harmless!
Permalink Reply by Daniel on November 18, 2011 at 3:45am I can vouch for this method working very well. We put a little banana in the cup instead of vinegar though.
I have another question though.. I found that one of my bananas was totally black on the side it was resting on, and there were a bunch of worms coming out of a crevice, yet all the other bananas in the same bunch were ripe/fine. Was this because the fruit flies somehow made their way in through the peel, and it rotted over a few days?? This totally confused and disgusted me...

I'm going to be inspecting my nanners more carefully from now on.... wow. Imagine how many worms I may have already consumed?! ........ -.-

Permalink Reply by Pamela Schmidlin on November 18, 2011 at 5:14am I have too try that!
Permalink Reply by Pamela Schmidlin on November 18, 2011 at 5:14am I have the same problem.....once ripe, I store them in the fridge- you can also peel them and put them in a plastic bag and freeze them for smoothies/ ice cream/ etc....
Permalink Reply by ♥ Love ♥ on November 18, 2011 at 5:54am I freeze super ripe ones a lot... especially when an entire box ripens on me before I can eat them all!
