My wife just gave birth to our second son a few days ago. Two raw pregnancies for her. Our first son is two, and weighted 3.3kg at birth, and the second one weighted 3.6kg at birth. And right now, she is breastfeeding both, and the second one gained 100 grams on day 3, when the average is 20 grams according to the docs.
But this is not the reason for my post, just the forewords.
With the birth, our son took a test for genetic diseases, and one of them is the Guthrie test for the phenylketonuria disease, which is a genetic disorder that prevents from metabolizing phenylalanine, an amino acid. If the disease is not detected young, the kids grow up mentally retarded. But the cure is really simple. It's a simple diet to follow so that the phenylalanine does not accumulate in blood, and does not damage the brain. And guess what the diet is: a vegan diet! And if the kids with this genetic disorder follow a vegan diet, they grow up perfectly normal!
So if it works for those kids, why wouldn't the vegan diet work for other?
My first son is two, still breastfed, but so far has only eaten raw fruits and raw veggies, nothing else, and he is doing really well, and amazes his grand parents. So we feel pretty confident about his simple raw vegan diet, and will keep it this way for him, and for his brother too.
So if you are parents and wonder about deficiencies on the vegan diet for your kids, look up phenylketunoria and the diet to prevent the brain damage in those kids. I think it can help you feeling safer.

Permalink Reply by Lindsay on January 23, 2011 at 9:47pm Congratuations! Thats great to hear! Lately, well-meaning friends and family have cautioned that my diet could lead to developmental problems for my nursing baby, and give examples of vegan children who have had problems or died due to b12 deficiencies. Even though deep down Im sure fresh fruit and greens would be highly beneficial to growing children, I still sometimes worry (and Im taking b12 supplements) so its wonderful to hear positive testimonies!
Out of curiosity, did your wife suffer the usual morning sickness, lethargy etc following a raw pregnancy?
Permalink Reply by Stephane on January 23, 2011 at 10:50pm My wife didn't suffer anything during the pregnancy. Sometimes she was a bit tired, and took a nap, but that was about it. Actually, on the afternoon before the delivery, she went on a small hike with our first son on the shoulders for all the hike (about one hour), and it didn't seem to bother her.
Regarding b12, we don't worry about it, but we live on a farm in south spain, and grow most of our food, and especially all our greens, which we pick and eat from the garden, and we get our water directly from a stream. So it's a bit different from someone living in the city... But breastfeeding is pretty safe too.

Permalink Reply by Darlene Navarre on March 5, 2011 at 2:46pm WOW Congrats! I too have two children who have been raw since birth and who also were born at home and tandem breast fed. Glad to know there are more raw parents out there. My sons are now 11 and 9 both are still enjoying and thriving on a raw vegan diet.
As far as the phenylketonuriadisease, I had a friend who's son tested positive for it and who's uncle had it as well but they never caught it and he was mentally challenged. Unfortunately the children are also at risk if they breast feed as my friend had to stop nursing him because of this. I think that part is crazy considering it would not make sense they could not process their own mothers milk. Of course I am not surprised about all the crazy things that have and are altering in the human body due to the lack of healthy eating and living.
Thanks for sharing I would love to interview you or your wife for my podcast Fresh In A Fast Food World when either of you are up to it.
Big Heart Hugs to the whole family,

For an interview, I'll talk with my wife, but we are sort of shy...
Also, maybe you could list your website on 811-friendly.net and your podcast.

Ok I am going to get a bit soap boxy here: I understand if you are both shy I only thought it may inspire and inform future parents into knowing more about fresher more natural approaches to parenting. The medical community advertises births in a "safe hospital" environment, fulling supplied with medication and feeding mothers SADly, this I would love to change.
I believe the more we share our own inspiration of how important #1 it is to be a healthy mother to bring forth healthy children #2 How completely capable women are to give birth to their children from their own bodies without medical assistance.
I find it interesting how a person will train for a marathon and yet most women have completely lost the concept of how important it is to train for a birth. Proper physical exercise and nutrition is key before even conceiving a child and then to birth them the physical, mental and emotional needs must first be met as well.
I only advise that emotional strong and HEALTHY women need give birth at home. It is 90% mental and the rest is a banana walk....
In short if you both would not enjoy the on-line radio show I wonder if we could do an interview over the phone and I could type in up on my site. I rarely get a chance to interview a family who are home birthing, tandem nursing and eating a fresh raw diet. I know the world would appreciate and be inspired by your story. I could even keep your names private using only your first names and/or alias.
I love your inspiration!
Big Heart hugs

Permalink Reply by Stephane on April 6, 2012 at 4:59am Thanks Karmyn. I just did.
Hope you and the kids are doing well. I hope we can make it to Hawaii next winter... So many things to take care of on our farm (we just planted about 200 trees this winter, digging holes and holes and holes...).
Cheers
