Been a bit of a lurker here for awhile. This is my first post. I own and operate a juice and smoothie bar here in a small town in beautiful British Columbia Canada.
I offer great smoothies that all contain 2 or 3 bananas, dates, and other fruits, and some greens. I field a lot of questions and usually I have no problems answering people's concerns.
What usually gives me pause is when someone tells me they're allergic to bananas or they would like the smoothie but leave out the dates. My mind is screaming out "really??" but I simply comply with their request. Sometimes I launch into how great bananas and dates are for energy and premium caloric intake but it's usually lost on them.
I find it hard to believe that anyone could actually be allergic to a banana (or any fruit for that matter). I guess what I'm hoping for here is something informational to share with these self -proclaimed allergy folks that may help them understand that they don't have to live with food allergies.
When I think of how great bananas and dates make me feel I just want to exclaim my joy to them....anyway----thoughts...??
Oh this is a tough one..... The only thing I could share is the way I go about it is just to tell people that... "Maybe they should look into it to find a cause, as it might not be something they have to put up with for the rest of their lives, especially if they don't want to." Or words to this effect, I think it varies depending on how I read the person (I have found customers at the Organic store where I work often respond quite well to this type of statement, particularly if they didn't ask for my advice!!), it could simply be a matter of pesticides causing problems, Sherry Strong (a well known Victorian lady in healthy circles) mentions a story in her seminars about a banana farmer she met who moved from conventional farming to bio dynamic farming and one of his long time workers went from not being able to tolerate the smallest amount of banana to eating them by the truck load!! Usually though I suspect it's due to the body struggling digestively due to S.A.D. Just my 2 cents I guess. Sounds like you have a wonderful business in a glorious part of the world, my hubby and I visited there many years ago on a snowboarding trip - such a gorgeous place with beautiful, friendly people! Take care :)
Great replies everybody! Thank you! I wasn't really planning on changing the way I interact with customers. I'm pretty respectful of people's allergies, dislikes and fears. I still find it very difficult to believe that anyone is actually allergic to fruit. Especially considering an HCLF raw diet can probably help people clear themselves of these ailments. Have any of you noticed these allergy conditions clearing up or even lessening to any degree, since being 811?
As far as nuts go, it does seem like a more serious issue. Some folks just indiscriminately grab raw nuts and eat them instead of soaking them and releasing the enzyme inhibitors. So digestive problems become an issue for folks and they claim allergies. I'm certainly not downplaying those who have serious nut allergies here at all.
Like Adelle's friend it seems hard to believe that people will remove the health giving items from a meal, be left with processed crap and have no problems ingesting and digesting that stuff! Is it a case of being addicted to items (additives, carcinogens etc...) that cause digestive toxemia or a fear or dislike of healthy fruits and veggies...?
Check out MeganElizabeth.com It's a blog of an HCRV woman who had banana allergies for a long time, but now can eat them. She doesn't explain in any of her videos HOW she overcame banana allergy, but she can now ea raw ones. Frozen are still a problem for her.
