Hi all, I imagine that some of you migth be curious about how my Dad is doing on raw. For those who are just new to this topic, please read my previous entries.
Anyway, the biggest changes in my Dad's health came from:
1) Starting him on 100% raw diet
2) Introducing zeolite in large doses (15 drops 3X a day)
He is still on both and doing very well. At the moment I would say that his memory is that of an "average" 82 year old. Not great, but not too bad either. He is still very quiet but when he does speak it is obvious that he can follow conversations from start to finish, he remembers what happened yesterday and week ago, he sometimes forgets the proper way to use machines in the gym, but then again, he has not been doing it for a long time and the range of exercises has been increasing.
Sometimes I get cranky with him because he forgets things and I am now treating him as if he remembers everything :-) He stays awake most of the day and can get himself up and get ready with just one wake up call and he can put himself to bed without any problems remembering his evening routine of brushing teeth and changing into his pyjamas. It is much easier now.
Zeolite has been fabulous, he obviously had a huge issue with heavy metal toxicity and at the beginning the changes were happening really fast. He is still on detox, but it sort of leveled off and the progress is not as noticeable.
We had a bit of a setback in the gym, he got to a certain level and then stopped and would not progress any further. In fact it looked like he was loosing strenght.
Now, what I am going to tell you now will probably upset some people, but I had a lot of great theories about fixing it all with HCRV and not everything went smoothly. He started to loose a lot of weight and the problem was that he was underweight to start with. I had to introduce some denser food like nuts, then salmon and then raw eggs. Within a week his strenght in the gym improved and he was less tired.
I know that it is not really the optimal way, but I would have to have no life if I tried to keep forcing him to eat more carbs. He already has about 1 and a half litres of smoothies a day, plus additional fruit, plus all the other raw foods. Plus of course, there is no precedence to what I am doing with him (which I could find). I don't know if it will take another month or 5 years to get him well again, and I am flying here by the seat of my pants, so if any one of you would think of giving me hard time, I invite you to come to my place and "walk a mile in my shoes". I am definitely a full time carer still, although it is getting much easier in some ways.
Anyway, he is well enough to do certain things without me now, so we started him going to "mens shed" and he is enjoying it very much. The guys there are fabulous and they give him some simple jobs and he feels productive.
Next we will be sending him to senior citizens centre and some more social things. I think that he is a bit lonely and would do a lot better if he had some company other than us. He keeps on joking that he might get married again, so any senior single ladies out there - you are welcome to apply :-)
Right now he is sitting in the office and reading a book, which is a miracle itself, as before he could not get through the title.
So, as I said, the next step is to get him socialized, get him a girlfriend so he has some motivation to work harder at getting well and shift him out to live independently. Hopefully that will happen within a year.
So much for Dementia and Alzheimer's. As far as I can see, those diseases are doctor made just like diabeties and cancer.
I am attaching a photo of the visual proof of how my father's body is reacting to raw. Notice how nice the new nail is growing now. The dark spot on the nail is the trauma when my Mum died. He has one also on his fingernail. So, pretty much before dark spot is not raw, from dark spot on is raw. Pretty graphic, right?

Permalink Reply by Peter Csere on April 11, 2012 at 1:22am As long as the eggs do not come from a factory farming operation they shouldn't have salmonella.
Have you considered, instead of salmon and eggs to up the calories, perhaps potatoes/rice/etc? Potatoes mashed with avocado might be a healthier alternative to the animal products.
Anyways, nice job with this. Hopefully other people with relatives struggling with Alzheimer's find out about what you did and consider this "radical" approach! My dad had a heart attack and hasn't really changed his habits. I guess the best I can hope for is that he'll develop Alzheimer's so I can trick him into being healthy. (That may sound cold, but that's the only situation I can conceive of in which he'd be persuaded to eat even remotely healthy, and otherwise he'll just keep getting heart attacks.)
Permalink Reply by Boshena on April 18, 2012 at 10:33am I think in winter I might have to give him some warm soups or even cooked potatoes/rice. He is very thin, so he will be feeling the cold more than other people.
Permalink Reply by Joni on April 18, 2012 at 6:52am Boshena, keep posting and letting us know how things go and change for you/dad. I'm curious. Mom just asked me to get the Zeolite from the same source as yours. So we're going to try it on my dad. So I'd appreciate prayers for him/us. His memory is just - poof! gone!! He has so little energy. I'm worried about him a lot. Thanks for the tip and again keep us up to date. Your posts have encouraged me.
Permalink Reply by Boshena on April 18, 2012 at 10:31am Yes, where there is a will, there is a way. I think it is really worth trying hard, because Alzheimer's is probably as hard on the carers as on the patients.
I know that you want the best for your Dad, but believe me, having seen what is happening to my Dad, I personally would prefer to drop dead from heart attack than get Alzheimer's. I am incredibly grateful that I probably found a way to avoid both.
Thinking about it - what do raw vegans die of? I mean, if we are in perfect health for ever, what is it that eventually gets us? the bus?
Permalink Reply by Briggsy on April 18, 2012 at 7:28am You are an amazing person. I admire the amount of energy and love you have offered to help heal your father. I am in awe. I am a nurse and know how difficult Alzheimers and Dementia can be. Thank you for sharing!
Permalink Reply by Boshena on April 18, 2012 at 10:41am Yes, thank you very much. Unless you have gone through it you have no idea. Sometimes I have visions of just putting my father in a home and getting my life back. It is harder than caring for babies, because you know that they will not be growing up.
Luckily it is getting better so it gives me the strength to persist.
Permalink Reply by Jessie James on April 18, 2012 at 7:28am Have you considered add a powder to his smoothies? Sun Warrior is a brown rice protein powder developed by a raw vegan who wanted to gain weight. It might be fermented though...that way you could keep him vegan. Everything else sounds wonderful! Congrats and I'm sure more success is on the way! :)
Permalink Reply by Boshena on April 18, 2012 at 10:27am I used to add things to smoothies, but then it occured to me that I am stuffing up the "elimination" period of the day, so I stopped. I might make some almond milk smoothies for afternoon tea and add other things to it. I will look up the Sun Warrior protein. Thanks for the tip.
Permalink Reply by Lucid Catnaps on April 18, 2012 at 7:32am I don't even know you guys, but I want to cry cos your Dad can now enjoy a book again... you're restoring quality of life to him, that's amazing and touching. I admire your strength and determination!
